Senior Health, Safety, and Enviromental Manager 

 

The position is a Senior HSE Manager who assists in the development, implementation and management of comprehensive safety programs that address personnel safety and property protection in compliance with OSHA and corporate requirements for our Woodland Vegetable R&D station, San Juan Bautista and Las Cruses.  This position will work directly with multidisciplinary teams and other non-HSE staff within departments/functions on site to develop and execute safety programs in accordance with federal, state, local regulations, and internal requirements to drive continual improvement and an incident and injury free work environment.  This position performs technical and small to medium scale HSE reviews for projects and equipment; and supports HSE program development (such as personal protective equipment, chemical storage and hazardous waste, job safety analysis, Worker protection standards, management of change, etc.).

 

YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

The primary responsibilities of this role, Senior Health, Safety, and Environment Manager (HSE), are to: 

 

  • Develop site safety strategy in partnership with site leadership to set site expectations with respect to HSE programs and compliance, and to foster a safety culture that is built on accountability and feedback.
  • Safety program management including the development, implementation and evaluation of compliance programs and internal policies. Develop strategies for process improvement within safety programs.
  • Audit workplaces and process for potential risks and compliance issues;
  • Investigate and document on-site accidents, illnesses, near miss and safety observations and implement injury reduction strategies;
  • Facilities project safety (HSE reviews, review of construction documents, planning, construction and renovation projects and work in progress audits) for small and medium scale;
  • Actively participate in incident response activities as a member and site emergency response team and biosafety committee;
  • Work closely with employees and contractors to assure the safe and effective operation of research facilities to include performing HSE audits, lab exits, incident investigations, root cause analysis, development and tracking of corrective actions;
  • Provide the critical license to operate by partnering with teams on site to maintain site specific environmental permitting requirements;
  • Engage internal and external stakeholders to ensure compliance with air, water, waste, and other relevant environmental programs for all current and planned processes;
  • Partner with security in the development and implementation of site-specific emergency action plans and procedures to assure business continuity and the health and safety of site employees, vendors and contractors;
  • Position entails driving a company vehicle. This may include being required to drive greater than 5,000 business miles annually in a personal, pooled, or rented vehicle OR being expected to frequently drive a pooled car as part of your job duties – regardless of mileage.

Required Qualifications:

 

  • Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Safety, Chemistry, Engineering or related field experience;
  • Valid driver’s license: Driving record (MVR) will be reviewed and must meet guidelines based on the company’s Risk Screening for Hiring Drivers;
  • Thorough knowledge of OSHA and general working knowledge of EPA regulations;
  • Prior experience directly managing/leading Health, Safety, and Environment compliance programs;
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and written with all levels of the organization with emphasis on the HSE community and management;
  • Strong computer skills and expertise with Microsoft Products;
  • Strong leadership/mentoring skills and the ability to influence stakeholders across
