About The Role

We are a fast-growing company scaling our operations in Portugal and seeking an experienced Payroll Manager to take ownership of our payroll function. This is a hands-on and strategic role responsible for ensuring the accuracy, compliance, and timely delivery of payroll while supporting our continued growth. 
 
You will manage our payroll operations for Portugal and act as the key liaison between Finance, HR, and our external payroll support provider. This role offers flexibility — perfect for someone who thrives in a growing business. 

This is a full-time role but we are also open to discussing a part-time or flexible schedule for the right candidate. Due to the demands of role, we expect the team members to work a minimum of 30 hours per week. 

This is a permanent work from home position based in Portugal. 

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING 
 

  • Oversee end-to-end payroll operations for employees in Portugal, ensuring accurate and timely processing in line with local legislation and company policies.
  • Supervise and mentor the Payroll team, reviewing their work, providing guidance, and ensuring high standards of accuracy and compliance.
  • Liaise with external payroll providers and ensure payroll data is correctly prepared, validated, and submitted.
  • Ensure compliance with all statutory requirements, including social security, income tax, absence certs and other local labor laws.
  • Manage payroll reconciliations and reporting for Finance, working closely with the CFO to provide insights into payroll-related costs and variances.
  • Support audits and internal controls, maintaining up-to-date documentation and process improvements.
  • Partner and advise in conjunction with HR on compensation, benefits, and employee lifecycle changes (e.g., onboarding, terminations, promotions).
  • Drive continuous process improvement by identifying and implementing efficiencies in payroll processes and systems.
  • Stay up to date with changes in payroll legislation and communicate their implications to Finance and HR leadership.

Your profile

To thrive in this role, you should possess the following qualifications, experience and attributes: 

  • 5+ years of payroll experience in Portugal, including at least 2 years in a senior or supervisory capacity.
  • Strong knowledge of Portuguese payroll legislation, tax, and social security requirements.
  • Has experience dealing with payroll for 400+ employees in Portugal
  • Have a great knowledge of employment law in Portugal on matters that impact payroll
  • Experience with dealing with Payroll internationally an advantage but not essential 
  • Experience working with external payroll providers and managing vendor relationships.
  • Strong understanding of HR and Finance processes, especially in a scaling or international company environment.
  • Fluent in English (written and verbal) essential
  • Experience of working in Payroll for a Business Process Outsourcer an advantage
  • High level of accuracy, integrity, and attention to detail.
  • Strong Excel and reporting skills; experience with payroll or HRIS systems is an advantage.
  • Proven ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
