Position Summary: 

The System Director Safety initiates and oversees the development and implementation of a comprehensive physical safety program and is responsible for compliance with accreditation standards and licensing regulations related to the program. Responsible for the leadership of safety assessments; coordinates the activities of the Environment of Care Committee; educates staff on their roles and responsibilities; and promotes a safe, functional and supportive environment within the health system.

Essential Duties:

  • Ensure compliance for all licensing and accreditation standards related to workplace safety (i.e. Joint Commission, OSHA), which include the following:
    • Safety
    • Emergency Preparedness
    • Life Safety
  • Ensures completion of the Periodic Performance Review (PPR). 
  • Coordinates activities of the management plans within the Environment of Care for the health system and serves as the Safety Officer for Central Maine Healthcare.
  • Alter, suspend, evacuate or terminate activities that may pose immanent safety danger to employees, patients or visitors.
  • Take definitive action to eliminate unsafe conditions, operations, or hazards.
  • Serves on the Incident Management Team Command Staff as Safety Officer, subject to call back for command activations 24/7/365. May initially serve multiple roles on incident command system activations.
  • Responsible for safety briefing and all safety related incident action planning (IAP) content.
  • Serves on the Environment of Care Committee.
  • Manages the Safety & Emergency Management Coordinator. Serves as the Chair for the Rumford and Bridgton Hospitals Environment of Care Committees.
  • Manages the Emergency Manager and the Emergency Management Program.
  • Manages the Safety Representative Program.
  • Manages the Emerging Infectious Disease Task Force.
  • Manage the ongoing process to collect and evaluate information about hazards and safety practices and identifies opportunities for improvement in the EC program.
  • Keeps informed regarding regulatory changes related to hospital safety and responsible for leading efforts to incorporate changes; conducts tracers and collaborates with staff to ensure compliance with TJC standards and applicable state and federal regulations.
  • Receives, investigates, and works to resolve physical safety incidents maintain records in accordance with approved hospital standards of document creation, retention, preservation, and destruction.
  • Communicates safety related concerns and improvement initiatives to Senior Leaders.
  • Ensures safety and facility quality control is in compliance with local, federal, state regulations and provide consultations. This includes coordination with the Facility Director to ensure the hospital statement of conditions (E-SOC) is continually updated.
  • Reviews and track data provided within the Environment of Care program to make ongoing safety improvements.
  • Designs and implements educational opportunities that develop staff’s understanding of safety standards, and their role and responsibility for maintaining a high awareness for conditions that could threaten safety and responding before the situation causes harm.
  • Develops periodic program activity reports for leadership including actions taken both proactively and based on occurrences as well as barriers to optimal program implementation. Recommends and facilitates change within the organization to promote a positive safety culture.
  • Actively participates in required hospital committees. 
  • Reviews and updates policies regarding Safety and Emergency Management.
  • Participate in performance improvement and information management activities. Coordinate a multidisciplinary team to conduct ongoing safety tours of clinical and nonclinical areas.
  • Assist in the enforcement of interim life safety plans and infection control risk assessments.
  • Oversees all on-site inspections, assisting inspectors and surveyors in the performance of their duties; provide reports as required in follow-up to surveys, inspections and audits.
  • Participates in the budgetary process to secure resources for safety program activities.
  • Maintains Safety Rep web domain content and shared drive folders.
  • Design and delivery of occupational safety programs.
