Position Summary/ Department Summary:
The Holt/Geleoc Lab seeks an entry level research assistant with strong motivation for hearing and deafness research to join a small lab focused on both basic and translational neuroscience.  Our lab is part of the F.M. Kirby Neurobiology Center and the Department of Otolaryngology and is in the Center for Life Sciences building at Boston Children’s Hospital.  We work on the function, dysfunction and repair of the inner ear.  Our goal is to develop novel therapies for restoration of hearing and balance due to genetic disorders. Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and carry out sophisticated molecular biology experiments including cloning, subcloning, plasmid preps and amplifications, PCR, Q-PCR, design and validation of CRISPR/Cas9 constructs, protein purification, western blots, etc.
  • Assists with planning specific research procedures, coordinating schedules of experiments and procedures. Develops and troubleshoots new techniques specific to the lab. 
  • Maintains accurate records of results and methodologies into a log of work performed. Compiles and helps analyze data, prepares charts, graphs, and results of studies. 
  • Demonstrates basic laboratory techniques to laboratory assistants and technicians, research fellows, residents and students.
  • Troubleshoots procedures if experimental results are unexpected or quality of specimens is poor. May suggest alternative procedures to crosscheck findings. Performs techniques typically required for the laboratory/study. 
  • Helps maintain model systems, including colony maintenance, genotyping, pairing, record keeping.
Minimum Qualifications
Education:
  • A Bachelor’s Degree is required, Master's degree preferred, with a focus on Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, and/ or Genetics.
  • Candidates should be highly motivated, organized and have strong analytical skills, excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a strong work ethic.
  • Work requires analytical skills to resolve complex problems requiring the use of scientific, mathematical, or technical principles and in-depth, experience-based knowledge.

  • Work requires the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. 
  • Experience with genomics, genetics, or molecular biology is a plus.
  •  Minimum commitment of two years is preferred.
