The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) owns, operates, and maintains eight major toll facilities comprised of four bridges, two tunnels, and two turnpikes across the State of Maryland. For over 50 years, the MDTA has provided Maryland's citizens and visitors with safe, secure, and convenient transportation facilities. Nature of Work: This is the entry level of technical highway operations/traffic management center work involving traffic systems control, incident/congestion management, and communications. Employees undergo training to learn to operate state of the art, computerized traffic management workstations designed to facilitate traffic flow and minimize congestion and security monitoring systems. Duties for this position include, however are not limited to, the following:


  • Access and verify incident/congestion conditions via closed circuit TV (CCTV) surveillance, Two-way radio communications, Citizen reports, and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) for incident detection and verification;
  • Program and operate ITS devices for motorist information systems such as Dynamic Message Signs (DMS) and Highway Advisory Radio (HAR);
  • Communicate with police, maintenance, and vehicle recovery units;
  • Monitor real-time traffic data to detect roadway congestion/incidents;
  • Program and operate motorist information systems;
  • Utilize computerized programs such as the Coordinated Highway Action Response Team/Advanced Traffic Management System (CHART ATMS) and Lane Use Control (LUS) signals to capture traffic incidents and control traffic flow;
  • Monitor and transmit radio communications;
  • Program and operate media information network;
  • Prepare and monitor various logs and reports pertaining to traffic conditions, incident management, intelligent transportation system devices; and
  • Answer phone calls from incident reporting network and report incidents to team leader/management


The ideal candidate will possess:


  • The ability to communicate clearly and precisely in a “high stress” work environment;
  • The ability to multitask, to include monitoring multiple computer screens and working in various computer programs, while updating information in real time.


Employees in this position will report directly to the Highway Operations Technician IV. Current vacancies are in Annapolis and Baltimore, Maryland. Additionally, the eligible list established from this announcement may be used to fill opportunities throughout the MDTA.


Employees are considered “Safety Sensitive” and “Essential Employees” and are required to work rotating shifts, to include evenings, nights, and weekends. In the event of emergency highway conditions, employees are subject to callback during scheduled off hours.
