Senior Manager, US Federal Tax
The Senior Manager, US Federal Tax oversees Thomson Reuters' US consolidated federal income tax compliance and IFRS tax provision processes. This role is designed as a direct succession path to the Federal Tax Director position, with the expectation that the successful candidate will work alongside the retiring director for one or more years before assuming full ownership of federal tax responsibilities and management of 2-3 direct reports.
About the Role
In this opportunity as a Senior Manager, US Federal Tax, you will be responsible for:
Federal Tax Compliance
- Lead preparation and review of the US Consolidated Federal Income Tax Return (Form 1120) on both a proforma and consolidated basis using OneSource Income Tax.
- Manage federal quarterly estimated tax payments and annual federal tax sharing payment calculations.
- Oversee preparation and review of ancillary federal filings, including Forms 1042, 5472, 720, 1120-F, W-8 BEN, and 8802.
- Support US Federal Income Tax audits, including analysis and preparation of responses to IRS Information Document Requests (IDRs).
- Manage tax compliance integration for acquisitions and tax basis support for dispositions.
Tax Provision (IFRS / IAS 12)
- Prepare and review the annual and quarterly US tax provisions under IFRS (IAS 12) using OneSource Tax Provision.
- Manage Return-to-Provision true-ups, Effective Tax Rate (ETR) development, and current expense calculations.
- Identify, measure, and document federal and state Uncertain Tax Positions (UTPs) and potential exposures on a quarterly basis.
State Tax Compliance & Provision
- Assist in the review and preparation of state and local income tax returns, including unitary filings, within OneSource Income Tax.
- Support quarterly current and deferred state tax provision calculations and state tax audits as needed.
Tax Planning & Research
- Research federal and state tax statutes, regulations, and case law to develop filing positions and minimize tax liability.
- Supplement the AI-based documentation of the US Federal R&D tax credit claim and assist with interviews of key personnel.
Technology & AI Adoption
- Champion the use of AI tools — particularly Thomson Reuters CoCounsel — to automate and improve tax compliance and provision workflows.
- Identify opportunities to reduce manual processes across the tax function and provide training to staff on new tools and process improvements.
About You
You're a fit for the role of Senior Manager, US Federal Tax if your background includes:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Taxation, or related field required.
- MBA or Master's in Taxation preferred.
- Minimum of 8 years of corporate federal and/or state income tax experience in public accounting or a large corporate tax department preferred.
- Hands-on experience preparing and reviewing US consolidated federal income tax returns.
- Required: Experience with IFRS tax provisions (IAS 12).
- Required: Proficiency with OneSource Tax Provision and OneSource Income Tax.
- Preferred: Experience leveraging AI tools such as Thomson Reuters CoCounsel to improve tax processes.
- Strong technical knowledge of US federal and state income tax compliance and tax provision disciplines.
- Effective written and oral communication skills, including ability to present complex tax issues to senior leadership.
- Collaborative team player with the ability to manage across multiple work units and develop direct reports over time.
- Proactive mindset toward process improvement, technology adoption, and organizational change.
