About the role

Job Description:

The Anesthesia Medical Director of Quality assists the Senior Medical Director of Anesthesiology in strategic direction, leadership, oversight, and support for the system-wide Intermountain Department of Anesthesiology. This Role takes the lead with subspecialty teams such as Perioperative Medicine, Sedation Care, Perioperative Pain Management, Cardiac Anesthesiology, or other clinical teams or work groups as delegated by the Senior Medical Director of Anesthesiology.

The Anesthesia Medical Director of Quality develops a culture of high reliability and best care for all patients and communicates effectively with all Anesthesiologists and associated Advanced Practice Providers (CRNA’s and AA’s) across the Intermountain system. This position also partners and collaborates with leaders in Clinical Programs, Operational Lanes, Shared Clinical Services, Shared Support Services, Research & Academics, Intermountain Foundation, Select Health and other aligned payers as well as the Specialty and Community Based Care Group, Care Transformation, and the Office of Patient Experience to create a professional and positive environment for patients to receive care and for providers to do their work.

This role participates in systemwide education, professional development, innovation, and continuous improvement. Importantly, this leader promotes excellence in the fundamentals of extraordinary care by engaging physicians, APPs, and affiliated teams across Intermountain Healthcare in a focus on Safety, Quality, Patient Experience, Access, and Stewardship.

This is a system-wide leadership role with key organizational relationships across Intermountain Health with a specific focus on leading the performance and continuous improvement of Anesthesiology and Surgical Services. This position reports to the Senior Medical Director of Anesthesiology, Surgical Services.

Essential Functions

  • Work with Senior Medical Director of Anesthesiology to guide quality anesthesia and sedation practices across the system as it relates to the pediatric population
  • Lead anesthesiology subspecialty team(s) value team(s) and Project workgroup(s) as delegated by the Senior Medical Director of Anesthesiology
  • Support and drive progress in key process indicators (KPI) metrics of Surgical Services
  • Drive excellence and affordability in anesthesia and sedation
  • Review safety events and perform quality peer reviews
  • Collaborate and interface with Clinical Programs to develop and promote best practices
  • Partner with operational lanes to optimize care interfaces and collaborations
  • Actively promote safety, quality, patient experience, stewardship, and access
  • Serve as a resource to physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, and other colleagues in coordination and education
  • Develop care models and evidence-based guidelines to establish best practices across Intermountain
  • Assist in educating compliance with appropriate standards required by all governmental agencies
  • Champion quality initiatives and policies and report infractions, collaborating to prevent future infractions
  • Assist in ensuring acceptable patient satisfaction rates
  • Regular attendance and participation in committee meetings
  • Maintain Standards of Patient Safety
  • Address inappropriate or unprofessional behavior, conducting performance reviews as delegated by the Senior Medical Director of Anesthesiology
  • Promotes employee engagement

  • Assist in promoting physician and Advanced Practice Provider alignment across the Intermountain system
  • Participate with Supply Chain Organization in cost savings initiatives
  • Support the focus on reducing the cost of care/per member per month (pmpm), with focus on improving the affordability of healthcare

Minimum Requirements 

  • Medical Doctor or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine Degree. Education must be obtained through an ACGME or AOA accredited institution, will be verified.
  • ABMS or equivalent AOA Board Certification in a surgical or anesthesia specialty
  • Availability to dedicate 32 hours per week to administrative responsibilities
  • Active Medical Licensure, or in process of obtaining licensure, is required
  • At least three years of clinical experience in anesthesia service practice setting
  • Three years of experience leading successful improvement in clinical settings
  • Three years of progressive healthcare leadership experience
  • Experience with change management with the ability to provide leadership in the adaptation and implementation of new processes and /or technology that enhance safety
  • Effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
