The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme has evolved greatly over the past 42 years in terms of the size and spread of its mandate, results and activities, driven by the changing external environment for peace, development and the eradication of poverty, by the wider acknowledgment of the role of volunteerism globally and by intergovernmental legislation.

• mobilizing volunteers to enable more people to be directly involved in humanitarian, peace building and post conflict recovery, as well as sustainable development and poverty eradication work of the UN;
• advocating for volunteerism and civic engagement in peace and development; and
• pursuing the integration of volunteerism across policy, legislation and programming as well as delivering on internationally agreed development goals.

UNV enjoys a unique global mandate to promote volunteerism for development and has done so since 1970.

Every day, millions of individuals across the planet engage in development initiatives through volunteer actions – both large and small – in order to improve conditions for others and for themselves, their families and communities. Individual and collective action has a major impact on peace and development. Volunteer action was pivotal to achieving the Millennium Development Goals and will be even more decisive for the Impact 2030 agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

At the United Nations Sustainable Development Summit on 25 September 2015, world leaders adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which includes a set of 17 SDGs to end poverty, fight inequality and injustice, and tackle climate change by 2030. The SDGs, also known as the Global Goals, are universal, inclusive and a bold commitment to people and the planet. Volunteerism is intrinsically rooted in Goal 17 yet mobilizes people to leverage collective action and engagement across all Goals.

The UN Volunteers Field Unit (FU) was established in Sudan in 1996. It works with and through partners (UN agencies, funds and programmes, UN missions and volunteer involving organizations) to integrate volunteers in programme country efforts to achieve national objectives.

UNV contributes to development effectiveness through its advocacy activities, advisory support in development programming and through UN Volunteers deployed across the country.

UNV in Sudan, in partnership with national partners and organizations, helps drive implementation of sustainable development practices in most communities where the international communities are present and active. In the process of implementation of programmes, the volunteers gain valuable experience, and this paves the way for them to join the agencies that they work for as substantive staff.

Sustainable Development Goals: 17. Partnerships for the Goals 

The intern(s) will provide support to the Sudan FU in implementing communication and outreach activities.

  Duties and Responsibilities

• Assist in liaising and following up with UNDP Procurement and suppliers on the production of UNV branded materials. 
• Support the participation of Sudan Field Unit in thematic days celebrations in partnership with UN and non-UN partners. 
• Attend meetings of UN working groups upon the request of UNV Country Coordinator, namely United Nations Communications Group and Youth Working Group. 
• Support the development and production of communication materials and visuals such as flyers, leaflets, brochures, short videos, photos, etc. 
• Coordinate with the Regional Office Communications Team to ensure the documentation of Sudan Field Unit activities on UNV social media platforms.
