The Database Engineer performs daily maintenance and support for the on premises and cloud based Microsoft SQL Server database environments. The areas of responsibilities include maintaining the Reliability, Availability and Serviceability (R.A.S.) of all database environments. The Database Engineer is also responsible for supporting the organizational growth through effective capacity planning, performance tuning and change management. This position must maintain coordination and communication with other IS resources dedicated to network services and systems development issues and projects. The Database Engineer reports to the Sr Manager, IT Shared Services.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities;
- Participate in the planning, installation, configuring, monitoring, and deployment of database systems in an SQL Server environment
- Assist with testing, implementation, and installation of new/improved systems, as well as product upgrades
- Ensure all database system operational processes are managed according to established service level agreement
- Maintain database objects such as indexes, tables, views, constraints, stored procedures
- Maintain archiving, backup / recovery, replication, cloning, import/export and refresh
- Design, test, and optimize/tune RDBMS components
- Install, design, and maintain SQL SSAS (Analysis Services), SSIS (Integration Services) and SSRS (Reporting Services)
- Install, design, and maintain SQL Clustering and have an in depth knowledge of always on availability groups.
- Support SQL server for large databases (over 1TB)
- Contribute to design, maintenance, and documentation of integrated database security and components in relation to SOX compliance
- Review and assess new features or upgrades to existing RDBMS components as well as application database changes
- Develop, maintain, and optimize programming code for maintenance jobs and application reporting tools.
- Perform continuing analysis of database infrastructure to assist in proactive tuning efforts.
- Maintains awareness of the rapidly changing Select Medical environment and recommends cost efficient techniques when supporting corporate and field systems users
- Recognizes and identifies potential areas where existing policies and procedures require change, or where new ones need to be developed, especially regarding future business expansion.
- Troubleshoot and resolve issues detected via monitoring tools such as Redgate SQL Monitor and PRTG.
- Perform database updates, patching, and prescribed maintenance during approved maintenance windows
- Interact with vendor to resolve issues and/or maintain vendor relationships
- Develop capacity assessment practices to forecast future software and system needs
- Conduct database security risk assessments that include, but not limited to, monitoring, investigation and reporting of security and access violations
- Work closely with neighboring departments with the intent on ensuring proper implementations of projects and maintaining a collaboration effort
- Work on an on-call rotation responding to alerts within the defined SLA
- Attend meetings and interact regularly with management, team, and clients to continuously improve services
- Stay abreast of industry knowledge and technology as it pertains to assigned roles and responsibilities
- Supports the mission and direction of Select Medical Information Services both within the department and throughout the corporation.
