HEALTH SERVICES PROVIDER (Licensed Practical Nurse)
POSITION TYPE
Non-Exempt
PRIMARY FUNCTION
The School Health Nurse (Licensed Practical Nurse) provides direct nursing care and health services to students and staff in the school setting. The position supports student health, safety, and wellness by implementing health care plans, performing clinical tasks within the scope of practice, and promoting a safe and healthy school environment. All duties are performed under the supervision and clinical direction of the Coordinator of Health Services, a Registered Nurse.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
• Current licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia
• Associate degree in nursing preferred
• Current certification in CPR
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with students, staff, and families
• Knowledge of and adherence to the Virginia Nurse Practice Act
• Ability to maintain accurate and confidential records
• Effective oral and written communication skills
• Ability to follow written and verbal directions
• Demonstrated professionalism, integrity, and ethical conduct
• Valid Virginia driver's license
REPORTS TO
Building Administrator and Coordinator of Health Services
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
• Provide direct nursing care to students and staff, including first aid, medication administration, and emergency care in accordance with physician orders and established protocols
• Supervise/observe students during administration of medication during school hours
• Implement Individualized Healthcare Plans (IHPs), Emergency Care Plans (ECPs), and other health-related supports under the direction of the Coordinator of Health Services
• Assess enrollment requirements, update annual health record and vaccinations, per Virginia State guidelines
• Monitor and respond to student health needs, including chronic conditions and acute illnesses
• Maintain accurate and confidential student health records in compliance with FERPA and HIPAA regulations
• Conduct required health screenings, including vision and hearing, and coordinate referrals and follow-up as needed
• Maintain daily clinic logs and documentation of student visits and treatments
• Ensure compliance with OSHA standards related to bloodborne pathogens and infection control
• Maintain a safe, clean, and adequately supplied health clinic; requisition supplies and equipment as needed
• Communicate effectively with students, parents/guardians, school staff, and healthcare providers regarding student health needs
• Follow policies, procedures, and practices as designed by Virginia Nurse Practice Acts, Virginia Board of Nursing, and York County School Division
• Serve as a resource to school staff regarding student health concerns and promote health awareness
• Participate in epidemiological monitoring and assist with the management of communicable diseases in accordance with public health guidelines
• Follow established procedures for reporting suspected child abuse or neglect
• Participate in weekly consultation and case review meetings with the Coordinator of Health Services
• Consult with and report to the Coordinator of Health Services regarding complex student health needs, changes in medical status, or situations requiring clinical judgment beyond LPN scope of practice
• Adhere to all clinical guidance, protocols, and directives established by the Coordinator of Health Services
• Participate in ongoing training, competency validation, and professional development activities as required
• Attend staff meetings and professional development sessions as required
• Support the overall health services program of the division
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Building Administrator and Coordinator of Health Services
WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Duties are performed in an office, school and clinical setting. Must have ability to communicate effectively both verbally and written with or without accommodation, to provide in-service training sessions and communicate with public. Visual acuity necessary to observe medical condition, patient conditions make diagnosis and/or effect appropriate first aid treatment.
