Located approximately 26 miles from the City of Fairbanks, Fort Knox is a centre of excellence for the Company as one of the few cold weather heap leach facilities in the world. Fort Knox celebrated its 25-year anniversary in 2021, and has produced over 8.5 million ounces since it began operation. In 2020, Kinross acquired Manh Choh – a project expected to commence production in 2024 and process ore at Fort Knox.
Fort Knox prioritizes being a strong contributor to the State and local communities, and since 2001, has helped support more than 300 community partners and has contributed more than US$25 million to the Alaska Mental Health Trust.
Job Description
The role consists of implementing and overseeing security programs at mine sites and other Kinross properties across the United States, following Global Security and local requirements. The selected individual will be responsible for promoting and maintaining a security strategy that effectively balances personnel, technology, and procedures in a cost-efficient manner. The individual will serve as the security expert for the United States, ensuring that all security activities comply with the Global Security Standards and Guidelines with consistency and uniformity. The position reports to the Global Security Director for Operations and will be based in Fairbanks, Alaska.
Travel will be primarily throughout the United States with some international travel required. Travel expectations should be considered up to 40% or as and when required.
Job Responsibilities
- Manage all strategic and tactical security elements of Kinross US sites and properties.
- Act as a security business partner for all US sites, providing oversight and guidance as necessary.
- Ensure the sites comply with the Global Security Standards and Guidelines, contributing to the implementation and maintenance of all the applicable programs intended to strengthen the security posture, including, but not limited to:
- Implement and uphold appropriate security systems, considering the sites’ management risk tolerance, incidents historical data, vulnerability assessments, credible threats and risks gathered through intelligence, as well as Kinross-specific security standards. These security systems should encompass guard force, CCTV monitoring, access control, alarms, and other measures necessary to protect company’s personnel and assets.
- Provide guidelines and support to site security supervisors for managing an effective guard force. This may involve conducting threat and vulnerability assessments of the sites to determine optimal locations for security officers, developing training matrices and written post orders, assisting with personnel selection processes when applicable, continuously evaluating the effectiveness of the guard force, etc.
- Ensure the sites follow the Kinross Gold Security Program developed by Global Security, having effective security measures in place that align with the standards relative to their respective threat and risk environments (procedures, electronic security, physical barriers, etc.)
- Work together with Supply Chain and other departments responsible for material accountability aiming at developing, implementing, and maintaining procedures to manage ingress and egress controls, storage and distribution of material on sites.
- In collaboration with other departments in charge of fuel management, implement a security program designed to place controls (physical security and procedures) across all fuel circuit points and investigate any losses, exceptions, or anomalies identified in the fuel management system.
- Implement and maintain the Security and Human Rights Program at all sites by integrating human rights principles into security activities. Promote this initiative among proprietary guard force, private security companies that provide services to sites, as well as public security forces when applicable. Conduct risk assessments, ensure that Kinross personnel receive annual training, and guarantee timely reporting of any human rights abuses or incidents involving the use of force.
- Conduct or support sites’ security personnel in investigations following the Kinross Investigation Protocols set forth by Compliance, Legal, Global Security, and Human Resources. Assure all investigations are completed in a timely manner and their respective findings are shared and discussed with Global Security and sites’ management.
- Develop and implement an OSINT program and monitoring capabilities in line with Global Security’s approach building towards an intelligence led decision making framework.
