Family Services Supervisor

The Family Services Supervisor provides professional leadership and oversight to a unit of Family Services staff serving the residents of Sussex County. This position plays a critical role in ensuring the safety, permanency, and well-being of children and families while supporting adults and vulnerable populations through high-quality case management services.

The Supervisor leads, mentors, and develops staff responsible for programs such as Child Protective Services (CPS), Adoption, Foster Care, Prevention, Adult Protective Services (APS), Adult Services and other human services programs administered by the agency. This role ensures compliance with federal, state, and local regulations while promoting trauma-informed, family-centered, and strengths-based practices.

This is a highly visible leadership role that collaborates with courts, schools, law enforcement, community partners, and regional/state agencies to improve outcomes for Sussex County citizens.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Supervision

• Provide direct supervision to social workers, family services specialists, and support staff.
• Establish clear performance expectations and ensure quality and timely casework documentation.
• Conduct case consultations, staff meetings, and quality assurance reviews.
• Mentor and develop staff through coaching, training, and performance evaluations.
• Support staff wellness and resilience in high-stress environments.
• Address complex, high-risk, and potentially dangerous cases.

Program Oversight & Compliance

• Monitor compliance with the Code of Virginia, state regulations, and agency policy.
• Ensure adherence to mandated timeframes for investigations, service plans, and court actions.
• Analyze program performance metrics and implement corrective action when necessary.
• Assist in program budgeting and fiscal oversight for assigned service areas.
• Prepare reports for agency leadership, board members, and state partners.

Case Management & Practice Excellence

• Provide advanced case consultation and guidance on service planning.
• Review and approve assessments, safety plans, foster care plans, and court reports.
• Support trauma-informed and culturally responsive practices.
• Ensure appropriate documentation in state systems and case files.

Community Engagement & Collaboration

• Represent the agency in community planning initiatives and multidisciplinary teams.
• Maintain collaborative partnerships with schools, law enforcement, health providers, courts, and service agencies.
• Interpret agency programs and services to stakeholders and the public.
• Participate in developing new community resources and service delivery strategies.

Policy Development & Strategic Improvement

• Evaluate program effectiveness and recommend policy improvements.
• Assist in development of internal procedures and supervisory protocols.
• Promote continuous quality improvement and workforce development initiatives.
