JOB DESCRIPTION:
This position involves the examination and administration of various state taxes within Maine Revenue Services’ Income/Estate Tax Division, Business Tax Unit. Responsibilities primarily include reviewing tax returns for accuracy, communicating with taxpayers and tax professionals to answer inquiries and resolve tax matters, and keeping up-to-date with changes in federal and state tax law.
A successful applicant will have the ability to comprehend and apply federal and state tax law; possess excellent math skills and knowledge of basic accounting principles; have familiarity with modern software programs; and be a clear and effective communicator who possesses the ability to deal with taxpayers and their representatives in challenging situations. Tax Examiners must be able to work independently and as part of a team.
The Tax Examiner I is a trainee position which, upon successful completion and demonstration of certain specified competencies after 12 months, results in promotion to Tax Examiner II, and upon successful completion and demonstration of certain specified competencies after 12 months as a Tax Examiner II, results in promotion to Tax Examiner III.
TYPICAL DUTIES:
- Reviews tax returns, benefit program applications, and records for completeness and accuracy.
- Interprets and applies federal and state tax laws for corporations, financial institutions, insurance companies, and other business entities.
- Researches complex tax matters with supervisory support in order to make adjustments and assessments required by state tax laws.
- Explains state tax laws, rules, and regulations to taxpayers and tax professionals, including Certified Public Accountants, and attorneys for their use in determining tax liabilities and filing requirements.
- Supports taxpayers in resolving matters relating to electronic services offered on the Maine Tax Portal.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited educational institution -OR- four (4) years of equivalent post-secondary education, training, and/or professional level experience in accounting, tax collection, finance, or directly related computer science that demonstrates the ability to use independent judgment, initiative, and discretion to make decisions on complex matters.
