The HVAC Mechanic I services and repairs components of commercial and industrial heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems.  This role provides preventive maintenance work on various size pumps, both residential and commercial heat pumps and industrial centralized air conditioning systems up to 250 tons. This is an essential position, and the typical workday hours are 7:00am-3:30pm and requires being ON-Call on a rotation.

 

Responsibilities and Duties

 
  • Services, repairs and installs air conditioning equipment of all kinds.  Diagnoses test repairs and replaces complex internal chiller controls and auxiliary components of a total system.

  • Understand manufacturer’s recommendations regarding scheduled and preventive maintenance, servicing and operation.

  • Troubleshoot and service all types of temperature control devices to use computers and related software to diagnose HVAC system problems.

  • Performs service tests and balance procedures to air and hydronic systems to determine required adjustments.  Makes adjustments to assure optimal system operation.

  • Diagnose, maintain and perform service repairs to gas burners.  Replaces heat exchangers and component controls.  Tests and set up burner operation to provide proper fuel to air ratios.

  • Maintains variable frequency drive applications on pumps and fans. 

  • Services and repairs humidification systems utilizing steam and/or self-generated applications.

  • Provides guidance and training to other maintenance personnel regarding HVAC systems.

 

Qualifications and Skills

 
  • High School Diploma or GED.

  • Four years progressively responsible experience in the air conditioning/refrigeration trade.

  • CFC Refrigerant Certification Types I & II or Universal.

Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.

General knowledge of the principles of air conditioning and refrigeration; of the practices and techniques used in the installation, repair and maintenance of HVAC equipment and systems; of refrigerant types, environmental impact, and gas reclamation procedures and equipment.  Working knowledge of OSHA regulations related to the refrigeration trade; of National Electric Code; of basic mathematics including area, volume, and weights and the practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions.  Skill in the use and maintenance of the tools and equipment of the trade; in welding, brazing, soldering, and silfoss; skill in repairing and servicing HVAC equipment and systems.  Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, drawings, specifications, and construction documents; to read and understand manufacturer's recommendations regarding scheduled and preventive maintenance, servicing, and operation; to use computers and related so
