JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
The Penn State Forestland Management Office is offering a paid internship for a Penn State student interested in a career path in the forestry disciplines. This is a 40 hour/week position with a 15-week term from May 12 – August 22, 2025. Start and end dates are negotiable. The intern will learn silvicultural and sustainable forest management practices in a university research forest setting, working side by side with professional foresters to manage day-to-day operations throughout the growing season. Highlights will include designing and implementing silvicultural treatments, creation and manipulation of GIS & GPS data, invasive vegetation control projects, and skills training in the use of forestry tools and equipment. The internship also includes an educational component featuring learning sessions and off-site field trips. Driving a motor vehicle in remote areas on narrow unpaved roads is a requirement for the internship.
Applicants must be currently enrolled in either a Penn State or Penn State-affiliated undergraduate or graduate degree program. Academic coursework in forestry, wildlife/fisheries, agriculture, plant science, GIS or related fields is an asset. Preference will be given to a candidate who can explain how this opportunity will help them reach their career goals.
This job requires that you operate a motor vehicle as a part of your job duties. A valid US driver’s license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks.
