Microsoft Cloud Operations and Innovation (CO&I) is the team behind the cloud. Within CO&I, the Datacenter Engineering (DCE) team is responsible for delivering core datacenter infrastructure for Microsoft’s cloud business. The MS portfolio consists of complex, multi-disciplinary, large scale, multi-year datacenter construction and lease projects. Responsibilities
The successful candidate will effectively support and drive the design of physical networking infrastructure during design development and address design-related issues that arise during construction for Microsoft datacenter facilities and assigned projects.
The candidate will work with internal stakeholders on Microsoft standards, requirements, and materials as specified; support design workgroups and cross-functional meetings for multiple concurrent capital projects; manage issues, decisions, and risks; and support initiatives that improve design quality, consistency, and delivery execution.
The candidate will be responsible for developing and reviewing Statements of Work (SOWs), design documents, bid packages, and options for physical telecommunications infrastructure and fiber optic cabling, including ISP/SCS and OSP infrastructure. They will assess operational impacts, deployment considerations, and implementation challenges associated with Microsoft-owned facilities. Additionally, they will serve as the telecom technical lead or supporting telecom lead on assigned projects and perform other duties as assigned.
- Collaborate with internal and external customers and partners, utilizing Base of Design documentation, to oversee the creation of the datacenter telecommunication designs from established Basis of Design (BOD) to Issue for Constructions (IFC). Candidate will also collaboratively manage the Construction Administration phase of datacenter until handover for new DC project buildouts, special projects and / or network upgrades with other discipline leads and partners.
- Collaborate with internal and external customers and partners, utilizing Base of Design documentation, to support the creation of datacenter telecommunications designs from Basis of Design (BOD) through Issue for Construction (IFC).
- Support and manage the Construction Administration phase of datacenter projects through handover for new datacenter buildouts, special projects, and/or network upgrades in coordination with other discipline leads and partners.
- Provide data center physical telecommunications design direction to A/E firms, including specifications, details, drawing examples, one-lines, schedules, and bill of material information.
- Support project-specific telecom technical design and oversee delivery of multiple concurrent datacenter design solutions aligned with project scopes, schedules, budgets, and quality expectations.
- Manage A/E firms and consultants through design development, review cycles, comment resolution, and construction administration support.
- Drive consultant accountability, package completion, and timely resolution of telecom design comments and project issues.
- Partner directly with cross-organizational teams including engineering design teams, delivery teams, operations teams, contractors, suppliers, and construction stakeholders.
- Review ISP, SCS, and OSP telecommunications designs for alignment with Microsoft requirements, project scope, constructability, and operational needs.
- Identify technical risks, execution gaps, and coordination issues, and help drive timely resolution with project stakeholders.
- Provide guidance to staff augmentation teams, including A/Es and A/E consultants.
- Support delivery execution across multiple concurrent datacenter projects while maintaining schedule, quality, and stakeholder alignment.
- Support remote construction teams and participate in site visits, in person or virtually as needed, to review project progress and help ensure quality is maintained.
- Identify opportunities to improve delivery processes, design coordination, consultant performance, and project execution consistency.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years technical engineering experience
- OR Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 5+ years technical engineering experience
