Director, Underwriting

About the role:

This position leads and directs an underwriting team and is accountable for business results through overall management and profitability of a book of business for the Travel Line of Business. 

 

What you will do:

• Directs the work activities and has full management responsibility for the performance and development of staff in accordance with corporate strategic direction.
• Provide coaching, career development, and inter-departmental relationship management for the team.
• Participates with senior management in the development and implementation of underwriting policy and business strategy. 
• Examine effectiveness of local & group risk controls put in place ensuring a cycle of continual process improvement.
• Represent UW on behalf of Company, Division and Department to both internal and external stakeholders & committees. 
• Maintain quality of documentation ensuring all relevant manuals, guidelines, and documents are current.
• Senior level technical and business management acumen, underwriting skill and knowledge of insurance and underwriting principles, practices and procedures. 
• Excellent communication, negotiation and presentation skills. Ability to effectively interact with senior members locally and globally.
• Ability to achieve results by taking a proactive long-term view of business goals and objectives. 
• Excellent analytical and problem solving skills.
• Monitor portfolio performance and analyze trends.
• Develop and maintain field underwriting guidelines, and monitor organization for adherence.
• Manage workflow, documentation and systems configuration.
• Regular, predictable, reliable attendance is an essential function of this position.
• May perform other duties as assigned.

 

What it takes:

• Minimum:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, Accounting, Finance or related field or equivalent combination of work and education experience. 
  • Seven (7) years of professional experience in underwriting or product pricing/ financial analysis
  • Three (3) years management experience.
• Preferred:
  • Completion of professional insurance certification/qualification (e.g. CPCU).
  • In-depth knowledge of mathematical application used in underwriting function 
  • Strong team player with a customer service approach
  • Abilities to elevate and drive UW technical excellence and identify enhancement (e.g. skills, tools)
