About the role
We are looking for an experienced designer to create and cultivate the design culture at Anthropic, a safety-focused organization at the forefront of AI research. As Principal Designer, you will set the overall design vision and strategy for how users interact with and experience our AI technologies.
Salary - The expected salary range for this position is $250k - $380k.
Equity - Equity will be a major component of the total compensation for this position. We aim to offer higher-than-average equity compensation for a company of our size, and communicate equity amounts at the time of offer issuance.

Requirements
- 8+ years of experience as a product designer, interaction designer, or user experience designer
- Expertise in human-computer interaction, user research, and design thinking
- Track record of shipping innovative and impactful designs
- Strong portfolio of design projects showcasing your process and results
- Excellent communication skills to collaborate with engineers and researchers
Nice-to-haves
- Experience working directly with machine learning models and designing interfaces for them
- Experience designing for chat or multi-modal interfaces
- Interest in AI safety and ethics
- Experience at fast-growing startups
- Experience recruiting and mentoring design teams
- Art direction and management of contractors such as illustrators, video editors, etc.
- Front-end coding skills
- Want to fundamentally change and positively affect how people interact with computers
Representative projects
- Design the user experience for interacting with an AI assistant
- Develop the visual style guide and brand for Anthropic research and products
- Develop design processes and best practices
- Conduct user research to understand how people perceive and engage with AI technologies
- Design interfaces for reviewing, monitoring, and improving AI systems
- Work with engineers and researchers to ensure a great user experience for AI applications
- Work closely with entirely new AI systems and design new ways for how people can reliably use them
