The Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) is the state of Florida’s social services agency. The agency’s mission is to work in partnership with local communities to protect the vulnerable, promote strong and economically self-sufficient families, and advance personal and family recovery and resiliency.

Within DCF, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health (SAMH) Program office is recognized as the single state authority for substance abuse and mental health services. The Office of SAMH is statutorily responsible for the planning, evaluation, and implementation of a comprehensive statewide system of care for the prevention, treatment, and recovery of children and adults with serious mental illnesses or substance use disorders.

North Florida Evaluation and Treatment Center (NFETC) is a 216 bed, all male, forensic, mental health rehabilitation facility. The Center is located in northeast Gainesville, Florida on 639 picturesque acres with regular sightings of deer, turkey, and other wildlife. NFETC employs a variety of entry level to leadership positions including food service, maintenance, direct care, nurses, counselors, rehab therapists, medical doctors, security, psychiatrists, and psychologists.

This role requires the use of independent judgment, a proactive approach to responsibilities, and exceptional attention to detail. Specific Duties and Responsibilities include:

  • Conducts physical examinations on new admissions and annually thereafter, in accordance with Department of Children and Family (DCF) Operating Procedures and NFETC policy and operating procedures, documenting completely, accurately, and legibly. Performs general medical diagnostic and prescriptive work for all residents in accordance with standards.
  • Insures that preventive practices and procedures are followed in accordance with DCF Operating Procedures for Preventive Medicine.
  • Refers residents to medical specialists and facilities in the community for necessary treatment and insures that diagnostic, treatment, and consultative reports are evaluated and utilized.
  • Employee attends yearly training in the following: CPR, First Aid, Mandt, Bloodborne Pathogens, Biomedical Waste and Critical Event Training (the latter 3 being under the umbrella of Adapt Training) and employee has annual TB testing done.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required for the position:

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of program management and delivery of mental health services.
  • Knowledge of mental health, psychiatric principles, practices and techniques.
  • Knowledge of human anatomy and physiology.
  • Ability to perform complete psychiatric and mental health assessments of patients.
  • Ability to manage mental health disorders and care of patients.
  • Ability to identify and evaluate illnesses and/or disorders.
  • Ability to compile and evaluate mental health assessments, medical histories and other clinical and laboratory data.
