JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS

The Tomato Genetics and Breeding Program in the Department of Plant Science at Penn State University is seeking a part-time researcher to assist with field-based tomato breeding and cultivation activities, with a focus on managing field research trials.

Position Overview:

The successful candidate will support the development of improved tomato cultivars by managing field trials, overseeing planting and maintenance, collecting horticultural and disease-resistance data, and assisting with breeding operations under the guidance of the program lead. This position requires a high level of independence, attention to detail, and prior experience in field-based research and tomato cultivation.

Responsibilities:

- Coordinate and manage tomato field trials, including planting, maintenance, data collection, and harvesting.

- Implement breeding protocols, including pollination, seed harvest, and data recording.

- Conduct disease screenings and phenotyping, particularly for bacterial canker resistance.

- Communicate and coordinate with growers, collaborators, and research staff across multiple locations.

- Maintain research records and assist with data analysis and reporting.

Minimum Qualifications:

- Ph.D. in Plant Science, Horticulture or a related field.

- Demonstrated hands-on experience with tomato breeding, cultivation, and field research operations.

- Familiarity with tomato diseases and management, especially bacterial canker (Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. michiganensis).

- Competence in data collection, basic statistical analysis, and digital recordkeeping.

- Strong organizational and communication skills.

- Ability to work independently in outdoor field conditions and travel regionally as needed.

Preferred Qualifications:

- Experience in experimental design, QTL mapping, and statistical software.

- Proficiency in basic laboratory techniques, DNA extraction and pathogen assays.

- Prior experience supervising seasonal staff or research interns.
