JOB SUMMARY

The Company has an immediate opening for an attorney to work on cutting-edge environmental legal issues. This role involves providing legal advice to the Company on environmental compliance and enforcement matters that range from routine to complex. Such matters may include supporting compliance with reporting obligations (e.g., Clean Air Act semi-annual reporting), determining applicability of various state and federal environmental laws and regulations to projects and operations, developing internal guidance documents to promote compliance assurance, supporting environmental due diligence, evaluating state and federal notification requirements for potential compliance issues, managing resolution of potential enforcement matters with state and federal agencies, and providing legal support for environmental remediation work.

This position can be located in Tulsa, Oklahoma, or Houston, Texas. Relocation is available for the successful candidate. Open to an Attorney, Senior-level based on experience.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Collaborate effectively with and become a trusted advisor to internal business teams

  • Provide meaningful legal advice to the Company by developing creative solutions that effectively balance legal risks against business interests

  • Conduct legal research; analyze legal issues; interpret laws, regulations and rulings; prepare and/or review legal and corporate documents; provide internal training; draft internal and external communications

  • Showcase exceptional writing skills

  • Demonstrate a high level of professionalism, respect, and decorum when interacting with internal business teams and external stakeholders

  • Engage (when necessary) and effectively manage outside counsel

  • Maintain confidentiality of matters and satisfy standards governing professional responsibility/ethics

  • Create attorney-client relationships with Company leaders that foster free and open communication of issues and incentivize involvement of the legal department in matters

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree

  • Juris Doctorate Degree from an ABA-accredited law school and admitted to practice law in a U.S. state

Work Experience

  • 3+ years relevant legal experience and/or expertise at a top regional or national law firm

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • possess general working knowledge of clients’ business-area specific operations and general Company-wide operations

  • analytical - accurately identify and assess legal issues and risks for routine matters for assigned area(s) of responsibility and recommend course of action to supervisor

  • outside counsel relationships - ability to work with outside counsel to achieve Company results

  • strategic planning and process improvement ability - provide relevant information and support initiatives as appropriate

  • oral communication (effective one-on-one communication skills with outside counsel and clients; conduct and participate in meetings; and prepare, conduct and participate in presentations to clients) - proficient for routine matters in assigned area(s) of responsibility

  • planning, organizing - responsible for managing assigned projects

  • written communication (clear, concise, and effective written communications, including emails, business letters, and legal memoranda) - proficient for routine matters in assigned area(s) of responsibility

  • perform independent work - regularly supervised

  • effectively work with all members of the legal department, including lawyers, contract administrators, paralegals, and/or legal assistants

  • influence on third parties (outside counsel, opposing counsel, third party representatives, and governmental agencies as appropriate for assigned area(s) of responsibility) - ability to effectively participate in negotiations on routine assigned matters within assigned area(s) of responsibility, with supervision
