Clinically Advanced Physician Associate - Orthopedics Assistant Supervisor - MSH - Full Time

About the role

Provides support and accountability as an experienced PA in the clinical area of expertise, and displays leadership and mentorship to designated PA team, associated medical teams and staff. Maintains clinical responsibility for patient care with supervising physician, and in collaboration with associated medical teams and staffing. Performs a broad spectrum of care regarding critical thinking, diagnosis, ordering of medications and diagnostics, and performance of corrective, preventive and therapeutic measures in the inpatient, surgical, and/or outpatient setting. Assumes medical staff privileging under the scope of practice of a delegated physician determined by Mount Sinai Health System, and the department of hire. The Clinically Advanced PA will have clinical expertise in the specialty of hire of greater than 5 years and operates as a role model for clinical care in the area of hire. The Chief PA assumes a leadership role managing a PA team, and responsible for all the associated duties.

Schedule:            4 days/week, 8 am - 6 pm

Clinical / Administrative Duties:

  • Provide patient care in outpatient clinic, spine consults, inpatient spine, and/or general ortho (primarily spine).
  • Adult and Pediatric Clinic: Evaluate and present Orthopedic Clinic patients to attendings.

Lead Clinic PA:

  • Collaborate with clinic attendings, office manager, administrators, and RN manager to streamline workflow.
  • Alert staff about supplies needing reorder.
  • Maintain and utilize mini C-arm in the clinic.
  • De-escalate patient care issues.
  • Maintain clinic medications (e.g., lidocaine, bupivacaine, hyaluronic gel injections).
  • Triage clinic emails (scheduling, issues, medication refills).

Joint Class:

  • Document joint class participation in EPIC for program compliance.
  • Collaborate with joint replacement attendings, quality manager, RN, and providers to maintain program certification.

Meetings and Coordination:

  • Attend necessary inpatient interdisciplinary meetings, monthly QA meetings for spine/general ortho with PA Supervisor.
  • Assist in coordinating PTO and coverage for inpatient/outpatient teams.
  • Assist with PA reimbursements. 

Recruitment:

  • Work with supervisor, HR, PA programs, and PA services department to review resumes.
  • Discuss job opportunities with candidates and coordinate interviews.
  • Assist in educating and guiding new hires through the onboarding process.
  • Assist in maintaining up-to-date credentials for new hires.

PA Staff Education:

  • Develop and conduct casting/splinting lectures and hands-on classes.
  • Organize quarterly journal club sessions for CME.

PA Student Preceptor:

  • Formulate schedules for incoming students.
  • Provide educational materials.
  • Organize splinting/casting sessions.
  • Educate on sterile techniques in OR.
  • Advise on presentation topics for inpatient team.

5 years of more of experience in clinical specialty of hire and/or leadership role of a medical team/PA team
