(NON-EXEMPT)

Position Title: Custodian – Full Time

Reporting Relationships:

Position Reports To: Custodial Supervisor

Positions Directly Supervised: Custodial Site Supervisor, Part-Time Custodians, Janitor Helpers


Position Purpose:

Responsible for supervising and performing the cleaning and maintenance of building facilities, equipment, fixtures, and furnishings. Oversee and perform routine maintenance including vacuuming, sweeping, mopping of floors, dusting, washing walls, doors, window, and emptying trash. Maintain pool and exercise areas, ice rink, racquetball courts, and facility grounds. Perform minor preventative maintenance and minor repairs. Report major maintenance and repair needs. Assist service personnel as needed. 


Nature and Scope:

This position requires knowledge of basic cleaning techniques, good organizational skills, and attention to detail. Excellent public relations skills, the ability to direct others, and patience are also vital to the successful execution of this position. Failure to properly clean and maintain the facilities can result in an unfavorable public impression of the Recreation Service Area and potential sanitary problems. 


Essential Functions and Basic Duties:


Assume responsibility for overseeing and performing assigned cleaning and maintenance functions.

  1. Ensure that floors are appropriately vacuumed, swept, and mopped. Shampoo and spot clean carpet. Remove gum.
  2. Ensure that walls, tables, doors, light fixtures, vending machines, mirrors, and windows are cleaned and dusted.
  3. Ensure that toilets, urinals, showers, tile floors, and other fixtures are cleaned and disinfected. Ensure that the whirlpool and sauna are properly maintained.
  4. Ensure that soap, toilet paper, and towel dispensers are filled regularly as needed.
  5. Ensure that trash containers are emptied as needed and waste receptacles are clean.
  6. Ensure that outside areas are clean, well-maintained and that all litter is collected. Clean sidewalks of snow and debris as needed.
  7. Ensure that all exercise equipment and areas including the pool, ice rink, racquetball courts, weight and aerobics rooms, etc. are properly cleaned and maintained.
  8. Performs minor preventative maintenance and repairs (including minor plumbing repairs) as needed.
  9. Set up room/areas for meetings, etc. 

Assume responsibility for establishing and maintaining effective communication, coordination, and working relationships with Service Area personnel, management, vendors, and service providers.

  1. Assist Recreation Service Area personnel and outside service providers as needed. 
  2. Keep management informed of area activities, any significant problems, and maintenance concerns.
  3. Attend and participate in meetings as required. Complete required paperwork.

Assume responsibility for maintaining courteous, effective relations with patrons and members of the public.  Assume responsibility for other duties as assigned.

  1. Perform miscellaneous cleaning and maintenance functions and the Janitor’s duties as needed.
  2. Perform routine security functions, such as locking and unlocking facilities.
  3. Oversee visual maintenance functions in the absence of the Parks and Operations Manager and the Visual Maintenance Manager. 


Performance Measurements:

  1. Building facilities, equipment, and grounds are clean, sanitary, neat, secure, and well-maintained.
  2. Cleaning and maintenance functions are safely and timely completed in accordance with established standards and procedures.
  3. Maintenance needs and problems are promptly identified and resolved or reported. Appropriate levels of janitorial supplies are maintained. 
  4. Maintenance functions are well-coordinated with other Service Area functions. Assistance is provided to other personnel as needed.
