This position requires you to maintain internet service and a mobile phone with voice and data plans to be used when required for work.

Purpose

This position is responsible for providing journeyman skills for the fabrication, installation, operation, and routine or equipment in outside plant facilities. Responsible for the installation, repair and maintenance of fiber-optics and/or copper cable equipment in outside plant facilities. Fabricate, install, operate and perform routine or emergency maintenance and/or repair of fiber-optics and/or copper cable in outside plant facilities. Splice copper and/or fiber-optic cable, terminate to terminal blocks and maintains air pressure in underground cable. Perform journey level work in a particular area of expertise as assigned. May perform other related duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

• Placing fiber and copper cabling in manholes.
• Placing fiber and copper cabling through the university tunnel system.
• Lead and assist contract labor.
• Setting up work area protection/including Safety hazard warnings.
• Operating a UT vehicle.
• Work area cleanup of cabling and materials.
• Entering time to work orders.
• Assist in the construction, maintenance and fabrication of facilities and equipment. Driving university owned vehicles to job sites will be required for this position. Maintain acceptable driver rating as established in Policy UTS157.
• Perform other related functions as assigned.

Required Qualifications

• High school graduation or GED.
• At least two years of experience in the installation and/or repair of outside plant facilities.
• Ability to perform duties in challenging weather conditions, as well as within construction zones of new structures or renovated areas of existing buildings.
• Ability to read and understand safety placards and adhering to OSHA rules and regulations and guidelines.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
