The BlackSky Innovative Solutions Group leverages BlackSky’s global sensor network, advanced artificial intelligence platform, and third-party data sources to develop high-impact data feeds for commercial and government customers.

BlackSky is looking for a summer Software Engineering intern to work within our Innovative Solutions Group supporting pilot projects. As a member of this team, you will work with geospatial analysts, software engineers, and data scientists on these projects, and report to the Director of Innovative Solutions. You will work with the team to generate analytic products highlighting BlackSky capabilities, develop new products/capabilities incorporating a variety of other data, and manage/query/update geospatial datasets used across multiple projects.  Your work will include machine learning, AWS, micro-services, python, GIS, image/data analytics, and ETL.You should have coursework or experience in computer programming and have a solid knowledge of python programming.  Experience or study in statistical / numeric programming, GIS programming, machine learning, web frameworks, cloud-based infrastructure (AWS), data ETL and visualization, image processing and analysis, and/or database are helpful but not required. This position is in Herndon, VA and the candidate must be able to work from that office on either a hybrid or in-office basis. This is a full-time, paid internship position.

Responsibilities: 

• Assisting the ISG team to develop prototypes and project pilots
• Participating in ideation and implementation of project pilots
• Authoring python code targeting ML, GIS, and Analytics solutions
• Authoring and deploying cloud-based solutions on AWS
• Participating in standard agile software development practices such as standups, planning, and code reviews
• Other job-related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications: 

• Rising junior, senior or grad student studying computer science, software development or other relevant degree.
• Prior experience using Python.

Preferred Qualifications: 

• Experience with GIS
• Experience with image analysis
• Experience with python ML and statistics libraries: torch, tensorflow, scikit, numpy, pandas
• Experience with data ETL and storage
