Kids in Need of Defense (KIND) is a global leader in the protection of unaccompanied and separated children who are forcibly displaced from their countries of origin. Launched in 2008, KIND champions a world in which every child’s rights and well-being are protected throughout their journey to safety. Building on its extensive programming and successful model in the United States, KIND is expanding in the Americas and Europe to bring its experience to bear in working with unaccompanied and separated children. Our work focuses on addressing the legal and mental health needs of this population; building strong partnerships and engaging in training and capacity strengthening with governments, NGOs, and the private sector; and advocating for systemic and pragmatic reforms to advance the rights of unaccompanied and separated children.
KKIND seeks a Managing Attorney, Legal Training and Technical Assistance to join its Training and Technical Assistance team within the organization’s Global Partnerships, Capacity Strengthening and Training team. The Training and Technical Assistance team is a multi-disciplinary team comprised of attorneys and psychosocial service professionals that work together to provide holistic, trauma informed, culturally responsive training and technical assistance to professionals representing and assisting unaccompanied children in and released from U.S. federal custody. The Training and Technical Assistance team provides high quality training and technical assistance to KIND staff and KIND’s external partners, including private sector pro bono attorneys, NGOs, and government agencies. The Managing Attorney provides management and administration of the training and technical assistance deliverables related to providing legal representation and assistance to unaccompanied children in immigration proceedings and supervises training and technical assistance attorneys. Additionally, the Managing Attorney, in collaboration with other team leaders, will coordinate and oversee implementation of the team’s training and technical assistance projects. The Managing Attorney, Legal Training and Technical Assistance will report to the Director, Legal Training and Technical Assistance.

Essential Functions
- Leads project management of legal training and technical assistance work, including managing implementation of training and TA workplans, developing workflows, assigning tasks to staff members, overseeing timely and quality completion of tasks, and regular coordination with the overall project leads.
- Systems oversight – Ensures systems set up for meeting team goals are working as needed; liaises with other department points of contact to resolve challenges to providing training and TA.
- Oversees data management for legal training and TA, and guiding the Legal Training team staff to ensure data upkeep, data integrity, and accuracy.
- Works with Psychosocial Training and TA staff to create holistic, trauma informed, culturally responsive content for training and technical assistance to legal professionals, including slides, hypos, interactive exercises for trainings, scripts for training videos, legal practice guides, practice manuals, Q&A documents, tip sheets, checklists, sample filings, and other relevant documents on a broad range of immigration topics related to unaccompanied children, as well as the intersection of immigration and the child welfare system.
- Reviews and edits content created by other members of the team.
- Provides high quality legal technical assistance in response to individual requests.
- Leads training and technical assistance sessions.
- Drives creation of an external portal for KIND partners by supervising the work of team members to organize, create, and update materials in the portal and maintain existing materials, and liaising with tech, communications, and Director of Training and Technical Assistance
- Oversees and drafts training and TA sections of funder reports as needed.
- Represents KIND at conferences, panels, and other meetings and public speaking events, in coordination with other KIND departments and in collaboration with partners.
- Participating in hiring and performance evaluation processes for Training and TA staff members.
- Supervise Senior Attorney(s), Paralegal(s) as needed.
Qualifications and Requirements
- J.D. and admitted to a local state bar.
- Minimum of 7 years of experience practicing immigration law, which should include representation of clients in humanitarian immigration claims such as asylum, Special Immigrant Juvenile Status, U visas, and T visas.
