Responsibilities

Assess and Identify Occupational and Non-Occupational Illness and injuries and
triage care. To assist with the rehabilitation of injured and ill employees with medical impairment and
enable them to return to work in a healthy and safe manner.

 

ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS:
The following essential elements are general duties that represent the broad spectrum of job
assignments.  The level of responsibility and job duties within the job assignment are commensurate
with established company-wide requirements.
•    Ability to communicate effectively both verbally, electronically and in writing with patient, family,
management, and medical community
•    Ability to assess and identify Occupational and Non- Occupational Injuries and illnesses and
triage care
•    Develop plan of care, provide care and treatments per Nursing Protocol and Guidelines
The following essential elements are more specific to this specific job assignment:
•      Must work independently within the scope of Occupational Health Nursing
•      Perform physical assessment and screening tests (Example: strep screens, urine dip stick,
glucose testing, tympanogram, EKG, vision and hearing screening, drug /alcohol testing ,etc.) to
obtain nursing diagnosis
•      Refer to Family Nurse Practitioner or Physician and if indicated an outside specialist when
assessment reveals need for care beyond scope of OHN
•      Facilitate Care, testing or medical care (x-ray, prescription medication, physical therapy etc.)
•      Document care, referral and follow-up in electronic systems and medical chart
•      Discuss findings, referrals, treatments, follow-up for any illness or injury with employee
consistent with his/her education, level of understanding and culture
•      Educate employee in health and wellness issues by using present complaint and "teachable
moment"
•      Obtain diagnosis and functional activity restrictions from outside provider and
evaluate appropriateness of restrictions to employee's level of recovery and functional ability.
 Coordinate and monitor care from external providers and refer to other providers when indicated
(Example:  Benefit Partners, Benefits, health plan case managers, etc.)
•      Communication with external providers, employee, and management to provide safe early
return to work
•    Possess general knowledge base that includes acute illness and injury; chronic disease and
preventative care.  
•    Must be self-motivated, make good judgment decisions while working independently.  Must have
the ability to prioritize work.   Follow company policies and procedures.

Qualifications

MINIMUM EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:  

Bachelor of Science in Nursing or Associates in Nursing

 


PREREQUISITE SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/TRAINING FOR JOB:  

Employees assigned to this classification must:
•    General Knowledge base that includes acute illness and injury; chronic diseases and preventive
care. 
•    Must have good communication skills both verbal and written and electronic as well as good
listening skills
•    Self-motivated, makes good judgment decisions while working independently and or alone 
•    Be able to perform all the essential elements of the job, with or without reasonable
accommodations
•    Have successfully completed appropriate training for the job
