THE OPPORTUNITY

The Senior Director of Compensation will lead Scholastic’s compensation strategy, ensuring alignment with business objectives, industry standards, and best practices. This role encompasses oversight of all corporate compensation functions, including executive compensation, salary benchmarking, job evaluations, incentive structures, and compliance with applicable labor laws. The position requires proven expertise in designing and implementing comprehensive pay grade structures (at all levels) and driving equitable and competitive compensation practices across diverse employee groups, including exempt staff, hourly / non-exempt employees, and senior executives. The successful candidate will also bring experience in FLSA compliance and executive compensation oversight. This role will report to the Chief People Officer, and works closely with key partners in HR, Finance, Legal and across the organization. It will also oversee a small team of compensation professionals.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive compensation strategy that supports Scholastic’s mission and goals.

  • Oversee the design, development, and implementation of a pay grade structure that integrates organizational objectives, industry standards, and equity principles. Experience with grading structures that support career pathing and development is a plus.

  • Manage the organization’s executive compensation program, including benchmarking, equity awards, and annual incentives, ensuring market competitiveness, internal equity and alignment with governance standards, company performance and shareholder interests. Company financial and proxy reporting experience is a plus.

  • Lead and guide the job evaluation process to ensure roles are classified appropriately and integrated into the compensation framework.

  • Conduct market research and benchmarking analyses to maintain competitiveness across all employee groups, including exempt, hourly, and executive staff, including managing survey participation, budgeting and forecasting.

  • Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations, including FLSA, pay equity laws, and other federal, state, and local labor requirements.

  • Provide strategic guidance and training to HR teams and managers on compensation-related topics, such as pay structures, salary adjustments, variable compensation plans, and incentive program design.

  • Oversee the annual salary review process, encompassing merit increases, promotions, equity adjustments, and incentive payouts.

  • Monitor compensation trends, regulatory developments, and best practices to continually enhance programs and policies.

  • Prepare and present analytics, insights, and recommendations to the executive leadership team to support strategic decision-making.

  • Lead, manage and develop a team of high performing compensation professionals, including recommending development and organizational structure to support the success of the function.

  • Manage and oversee the compensation budget for the HR function, working closely with the CPO and the Finance partners, to ensure the compensation strategies, vendors and programs are competitively priced and managed in the company’s best interest.
