Job Description:

Under supervision of a licensed journey-level electrician, the Airport Lighting and Sign Technician Lead coordinates with airport tenants, Facilities Maintenance Coordinators, Airport Control and all other airport workgroups for the incorporation and maintenance of lighting and electrical systems. Acts as a liaison with the Building Automation Systems group. Serves as a lead worker on assigned shift crew(s).

About the Position:

Lead a team responsible for maintaining the Airport's critical lighting, electrical, and signage systems. This hands-on role provides technical leadership and training, coordinates daily operations, troubleshoots complex lighting control systems, and helps ensure safe, efficient, and reliable airport operations through preventive maintenance, system improvements, and energy conservation initiatives.

Position Hourly Range:

$29.08 - $38.26/hr based on qualifications and experience.

Typical Duties:

  • Serves as a Lead to Airport Lighting and Sign Technicians who assists with general training and mentorship regarding projects and equipment.

  • Facilitates team’s ability to meet project goals and deadlines. Monitors team performance making suggestions to supervisor.

  • Makes recommendations of personnel to be assigned to individual Lighting and Sign projects. May provide back-up support for other work crews when necessary.

  • Develop and carry out training plans for the Airport Lighting and Sign Technicians.

  • Troubleshoots and diagnoses lighting, sign systems, or equipment malfunctions using various test instruments and tools. Repairs or replaces faulty wiring. Requests or recommends required maintenance of related facilities, buildings and associated equipment related to lighting systems.  May request Capital Improvement projects for lighting systems.

  • Identify and troubleshoot issues within the Lighting Control Panel (LCP) and make necessary adjustments and repairs. Monitors, troubleshoots, and adjusts as needed the varying standalone lighting systems.

  • Check daily the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) and prioritize urgent tasks and customer needs.  

  • Plans, installs, and modifies building lighting distribution systems.  Maintains electrical equipment including switches and lighting by making appropriate repairs and adjustments.  Including the incorporation of new lighting types, new energy code requirements to utilize occupancy, motion, and vacancy sensors.

  • Coordinates and works closely with the Building Automation Systems group to monitor light levels and make decisions regarding harvesting and lowering light levels to a safe value and still maintain safety standards for the traveling public.

  • Rebuilds various types of equipment such as lighting and distribution equipment, switches, contactors, relays, and related equipment as needed.

  • Reads blueprints and drawings and must be familiar with various methods of design and symbols commonly used in electrical schematics.

  • Maintains accurate records of work performed, time, and materials used.  Maintains inventories of equipment and replacement parts.  Performs preventive maintenance and creates maintenance schedules.  Recommends material procurement.

  • Works with contractors and may inspect their work to ensure compliance with Airport specifications.  Works closely with tenants and vendors in leased area to meet lighting needs and make repairs during hours that will not interfere with business activity.

  • May operate heavy equipment, including aerial platform vehicles, trenchers, and backhoes to perform assigned tasks.

  • Designs, implements, and monitors lighting energy conservation measures.  Works closely with the Building Automations programmers to implement cost saving controls.
