Medical Assistant I - Nephrology-Endocrinology

Summary

The Department of Medicine is seeking an entry-level Medical Assistant with clinical knowledge to support the clinical operation within the department. The ideal candidate will have an interest in working with several diverse teams.

 

This position is an outpatient position located at the McNair Campus in the Texas Medical Center with a general work schedule of Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 5:00pm.

Job Duties

• Ensures efficient clinic operation by providing clinical support within the department. 
• Collects vital information from the patient prior to an exam such as vital signs, medication reconciliation, and updates to electronic medical records within the Epic EMR system. 
• Preforms clinical point of care tests (POCTs) and vaccine administration as ordered by the provider. 
• Assists with medical triaging of patient needs via telephone triage or electronic communications with the patient through the MyChart system. 
• Assists with the cross training of new staff within the department and Live Answer program. 
• Assists with on-boarding of new staff within the department. 
• Preforms daily checks of inventory and central supplies within the department central supply room.
• Assists with preforming quality checks of POCT within primary section (ex. dipstick quality checks, refrigerator temperature checks).
• Maintains a clean and safe work environment; stocks supplies for various department needs. 
• Responds to routine patient phone calls and MyChart messages and routes to RN, ACP or MD as needed.
• Performs clerical/administrative responsibilities such as filing and/or scanning patient medical records, obtaining lab/x-ray reports, hospital notes, and referral information.
• Takes inventory of clinic supplies and orders supplies as needed.
• Sorts and distributes clinic mail and medical records to the appropriate clinic personnel.
• Supports other teams by assisting with clinical tasks, triaging calls, completing faxes or medical forms, completing prior authorizations, various point of care testing (EKG, urine dip stick, specimen collection, etc), and assisting providers in minor in office procedures as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED and completion of an approved Medical Assistant Training program through an accredited institution.
• No experience required.
• Current certification as a Medical Assistant through an accredited professional organization (AAMA, AMT, ARMA, NCCT, NHA, NAHP, or AMCA). New employees who are not currently certified, must obtain certification within six months of employment.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification through American Heart Association
