Position Summary

The Value Chain Optimization (VCO) team has an opening for a Planning & Optimization Engineer supporting the Anacortes WA Refinery. This role reports through the VCO West Region to the Refining Economics & Planning Manager.

This individual will develop, optimize, and execute logistics planning and commodity scheduling while working closely with the E&P team to identify and advance optimization opportunities. This position works across organizations, including but not limited to MPLX, Commercial Scheduling, Commercial Planning & Optimization, and Refinery Products Control. The ideal candidate should be a strong communicator with interest in learning refinery economics and MPC’s commercial side of the business.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinates the commercial aspects of refinery operations, including feedstock selection, product and intermediate placement, supply chain optimization, and market analysis.

  • Demonstrates a fundamental understanding of refinery operations, economics, and market dynamics. Develops and communicates strategies that capture missed opportunities and closes production optimization gaps.

  • Proficient in APS scheduling software, utilizing it in daily job tasks. Proficient in other software to manage dock scheduling/optimization, product certification, etc. Potential to develops optimized and executable production plans for a single refinery using linear programming simulation models. Modifies production plans as needed to adjust to demand/margin changes. Identifies constraints associated with refinery modeling, uses provided input to develop refinery plans.

  • Assists in developing decision-making frameworks and presenting findings to stakeholders.

  • Manages scheduling and coordinating responsibilities independently. Has built relationships with key Refinery and Commercial stakeholders.

  • Executes new business processes and improves existing processes to reduce risk, improve performance, and add value to the operations team. Executes efficiency upgrades to work processes for their respective area.

  • Conducts project support cases independently under supervision

  • Demonstrates understanding of refinery operations and commercial aspects of projects. Able to analyze data, identify issues, and propose solutions with guidance.

  • Able to provide backup coverage to at least one other desk.

  • Understands financial implications of supply coordination across multiple desks. Proactively identifies and communicates commercial / operational optimization opportunities that improve area’s financial disposition.

Education and Experience

Planning & Optimization Engineer II

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering required. Chemical Engineering preferred.

  • Two (2) years relevant experience. Technical Services or Economics & Planning experience preferred.

Planning & Optimization Engineer III

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering required. Chemical Engineering preferred.

  • Four (4) years relevant experience. Technical Services or Economics & Planning experience preferred.
