DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
The work involves providing specialized nursing care techniques related to the care and treatment of patients in the Burn Unit of the Erie County Medical Center Corporation. The incumbent performs a variety tasks related to burn therapy and preparation of patients and environment for laboratory and operating procedures. Work is performed under the direct supervision of a higher ranking employee. Supervision is not a function of this position. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Performs minor debridement using a wash cloth; prepares and assists with major debridement and escharotomie;
Assists in the removal and application of dressing and topical agents;
Prepares patient and assessment room for shower and tub procedures;
Ensures general maintenance of hydrotherapy room, shower room and assessment room which involves the strict monitoring of infection control;
Prepares supplies and environment for burn wound care;
Monitors vital signs when necessary;
Maintains inventory stock of supplies such as hydrotherapy liners, surginet and emergency trays;
Assists with admission procedures;
Assists with early mobilization and ambulation of patients.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Good knowledge of current burn nursing techniques and procedures; good knowledge of nursing standards in accepted patient care; good knowledge of infection control techniques; skill in performing and demonstrating nursing techniques; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships; ability to understand and carry out oral instructions; ability to stand for prolong periods; ability to utilize computer applications; tact; physically capable of performing the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and two (2) years of nursing aide experience in a critical care, burn or medical/surgical unit.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
Possession of a Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification or Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) Certification before completion of the probationary period.
NOTE: Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting full-time experience requirements.
