Environmental Health Specialists perform health inspections of various facilities to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. They provide information and education to owners and operators of various facilities regarding compliance to regulations, and oversee the issuance and revocation of permits. The work they perform includes conducting in person inspections to identify deficiencies in compliance of various public health standards. They are responsible for reporting such violations to appropriate agencies. Environmental Health Specialists are often in the field conducting their work where they may come in contact with a variety of situations and circumstances.COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:

Health Department $52,104 - $80,828
Minimum Qualifications:
Driver's License.
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
Completed at least 30 college credit hours in natural sciences such as biology, chemistry, microbiology, or related field such as engineering, geology, or physics.
Preferred Qualifications:
Preferred qualifications are experiences, education, and/or other job-related qualifications considered to be highly desirable by Merit System agencies. The preferred qualifications may be used by the hiring agency to identify applicants to invite to participate in subsequent selection processes.
Experience working with a public health department/agency.
Typical Job Duties:
Performs administrative tasks such as maintaining records, gathering/documenting information, preparing resolutions, and updating systems in order to document and coordinate the work of the environmental health inspection unit.
Communicates with individuals (e.g., citizens, inspectors, supervisors, other departments, and/or department managers) in an effort to represent the department, answer questions, and/or explain information (e.g., law, codes, ordinances).
Conducts health inspections of facilities, sites, and/or equipment by contacting property owners, collecting data samples, identifying hazards and interpreting laws in order to ensure compliance with public health rules and regulations.
Assigns public health scores after completion of inspections in order to rate the overall level of compliance for inspection sites.
Collects various samples (e.g., food, water, air) from inspection sites in order to identify relevant public health violations.
Condemns or interrupts the use of items/equipment that are not in compliance with applicable rules/regulations/standards for health and safety reasons.
Recommends corrective action for residents/owners/operators/stakeholders in order to bring them into compliance with applicable health laws, rules, and regulations.
Engages in activities designed to ensure professional development, awareness of developments in the field, and knowledge of relevant practices, rules, laws, policies, and/or guidelines.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Job involves moderate physical exertion required for occasional periods of standing, walking, lifting, carrying, balancing, climbing, stooping, kneeling, or crouching.WORK ENVIRONMENT:
