Who We Are 

Denver's Department of Public Health and Environment (DDPHE) is dedicated to advancing Denver's environmental and public health goals. DDPHE works collaboratively with city, state and community partners to conduct education, community engagement, and enforcement to promote healthy people, healthy pets, and a sustainable environment. DDPHE oversees a number of services related to public health and the environment and is comprised of seven divisions: Division of Shared Services and Business Operations; Community & Behavioral Health; Public Health Investigations; Denver Animal Protection; the Office of Medical Examiner; Emergency Management and Medical Operations; and Environmental Quality. What You’ll Do 

This internship will work within the Environmental Landuse and Planning (ELUP) Section of Environmental Quality on various environmental programs. ELUP is responsible for managing the City’s environmental liabilities and protection of public health and environment in environmental site assessments of city property acquisitions, environmental material management of city construction projects, environmental remediation of city owned property including Superfund sites, asbestos management of city owned buildings, landuse and site planning reviews, and brownfields redevelopment. As an intern, you will have exposure to many of the programs, to utilize your skills and knowledge of environmental data analysis, regulatory frameworks, and training opportunities.

As an intern you will get to experience:

• Broad program exposure in the Environmental Landuse and Planning Section of Environmental Quality Division including environmental site assessment, city asbestos management, contaminated land redevelopment, and environmental remediation programs
• Implementation of an asbestos-containing building material tracking software for city buildings
• Review environmental site assessment reports and material management plans for city property acquisitions and construction projects utilizing knowledge of groundwater hydrology, environmental sampling, human exposure screening levels, environmental contamination fate and transport, and soil contamination
• Conduct environmental site visits to assess field conditions and obtain environmental analytical samples
• Evaluate environmental regulations for applicability
• Office and administrative duties, and opportunities for training classes and attend conferences

Minimum Qualifications:  

Education Requirement:  Current enrollment in an accredited college program leading to a certificate, licensure, associates, bachelor’s, or higher degree in science, technology, engineering, mathematics or closely related field, or a recent graduate (completed specified program within 1 year of completion).  

Experience: None  

Education and Experience Equivalency: No substitution of experience for education is permitted.  

License/Certification Requirement:  Requires a valid Driver's License at the time of application.
