Engineering Manager, Integrated Benefits
BettermentAbout the role
About Betterment
Betterment is a leading, technology-driven financial services company that offers investing and retirement solutions for retail investors and investment advisors as well as financial wellness solutions, including a 401(k) for small and medium-sized businesses. Our team is passionate about our mission: making people’s lives better. We’re headquartered in NYC and offer hybrid NY-based positions (three days/ week in-office).
About the role
The Integrated Benefits team helps create a seamless experience for our Betterment at Work clients, also known as employers, by integrating with various payroll providers. We are responsible for building and maintaining payroll integrations as well as managing employer-sponsored benefits beyond the 401(k), such as savings for education with a 529 plan. We collaborate with product, design and business partners as well as external third-party vendors and payroll providers to make complicated benefits like 401(k)s and 529 education savings accounts easy to navigate and we help bring novel offerings like student loan management for employees to life. We’re looking for teammates who are passionate about financial wellness and motivated by complex problems.
As an Engineering Manager on this team, you’ll help lead us through a period of growth and maturation. You’ll collaborate closely with product, engineering and cross-functional leadership to execute on a mission-aligned roadmap with your team. You’ll also get the opportunity to lead and contribute to projects as well as achieve operational excellence in everything we do. You’ll constantly be navigating new intricacies of our domain and collaborating tightly with other engineering leaders and stakeholders of different backgrounds, all while helping mentor and grow a team of amazing engineers.
This role is based out of our NYC office. Below we've reflected the base salary range we would offer for this position. Actual salaries may vary depending on factors including but not limited to location, experience, and performance. The range listed is just one component of Betterment’s total compensation package for employees.
- New York City: $170,000 - $195,000
We offer a competitive equity package, health, dental and vision benefits, life and AD&D, short-term and long-term disability insurance, EAP, commuter and parking benefits FSA/HSA, and 401(k) with employer match as well as a flexible PTO policy. This job may also be eligible for variable compensation in the form of a company incentive bonus. For jobs based out of our NYC HQ, we require in office attendance Tuesday through Thursday, weekly.
A day in the life
- Lead and manage ~4-5 engineers on a senior-leaning team. We work in a full-stack ecosystem, but our focus is mostly back-end.
- Serve as an effective player-coach, using direct project leadership and contributions to gain first-hand expertise into the world of 401(k)s. If you love nuance, you’ll love our domain.
- Build things people love. Our goal is to delight our customers whenever possible. Sleek design, simple user experience, and access to sophisticated advice.
- Collaborate with product managers, staff engineers and subject matter experts to make sure the team is always building the right stuff and doing so thoughtfully.
- Inspire and maintain a strong, equitable engineering culture founded on transparency, inclusivity, mentorship, and collaboration.
What we’re looking for
- Experience in object-oriented programming. We write our apps in Ruby on Rails, but other server-side languages like Java or Python could be a good foundation.
- Experience with hands-on managing, mentoring, and inspiring an established team of talented engineers.
- Experience leading execution of large team projects and execution of smaller concurrent projects in partnership with senior engineers.
- Experience building important, high production-value software where quality and correctness matters while preserving a nimble, fluid, highly productive culture and workflow.
- A passion for developing your reports and helping craft opportunities for them to grow into continually more impactful team members.
- A love of software engineering and a willingness to get into the code to better understand the sophisticated business domains we work in.
- Experience collaborating with other engineering teams, product managers, subject matter experts, and non-technical stakeholders.
