The Department of Public Works (DPW) in the City of Atlanta is seeking candidates who are interested in building a future with our organization and community. We are looking for a highly motivated partner that will be responsible for managing, planning, and providing strategic leadership for the Department of Public Works (DPW) sustainability initiatives. This includes the department’s deactivated landfills, solid waste programs, green building initiatives and the city’s implementation of electric vehicles (EVs) and other alternative fuel vehicles. 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Facilitator and implements environmental policies and strategic goals of sustainability for the department
  • Provides technical assistance and guidance and develops programs to enhance the City’s solid waste, organic waste and recycling programs that will help reduce the city’s waste footprint
  • Works closely with the Fleet division to provide strategic input for the city’s EV implementation plan
  • Assists in obtaining grants for “Green” and environmental initiatives
  • Provides guidance on implementation of the city’s Climate Resiliency Plan
  • Develop and implement methods and procedures to monitor projects, research strategies, analyze findings, create progress reports, and inform leadership and partners of status to ensure effective collaboration
  • Completes, reviews, compiles, and submits reports to comply with EPA, GAEPD, and City requirements
  • Develop/ and/or review feasibility studies for potential landfill repurposing projects
  • Stays abreast of the latest disposal trends for solid waste and provides strategic insight into new ways to dispose of waste versus using a landfill
  • Meets with residents, city departments and outside organizations to answer questions and present information on the department’s environmental and sustainability initiatives
  • Maintains current working knowledge of and ensures compliance with all applicable local, state federal and internal environmental laws and regulations
  • Manage the preparation of plans, studies, and reports relating to current and long-range sustainability and resource conservation
  • Gather, organize, and track data that supports the sustainability program
  • Provide quarterly insights to the DPW’s leadership team on the department sustainability initiatives and the latest trends in the industry
  • Promote innovative practices which are economically, socially, and environmentally sustainable

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

 

  • Extensive knowledge of all areas of environmental science and sustainability measures.
  • Knowledge of Green Building requirements for construction and renovation projects.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize tasks, and proactively identify opportunities for deeper sustainability integration.
  • Ability to create a positive image to the public relative to City environmental initiatives. 
  • Strong leadership, communication, and influencing skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong presentation skills to varying groups of individuals.
  • Ability to analyze and understand research and to identify relevant and valuable information.

 

 

Minimum Requirements

 

  1. Bachelor's degree in Sustainability, Environmental Science, Material Science, or related fields, and 
  2. 5 years of experience in sustainability planning and/or project management.
