POSITION SUMMARY:
The position provides a safe operating environment by directing installation, maintenance and repairs of machines, tools, equipment and utility systems, and contributing to project production work completion and planning for docking and undocking of vessels while assuring ship and dry dock safety. The individual will establish department goals, policies and departmental procedures. Ketchikan’s Dockmaster/Facility Manager is a multifaceted role. At all times it encompasses acting as the Facility Manager, Dockmaster, Security Manager and Master Rigger.

 
Alaska Dockmaster/ Facility Manager:
Works with project managers with the availability and capabilities of work on docks and piers. The Dockmaster is in the first line of customer services for incoming vessels and good customer service skills is required. Must have a solid understanding of marine operations and know CAD. The Dockmaster is responsible for the daily operations of the waterfront along with other duties including working with all craft supervisors, project supervisors and Safety in order to successfully and safely moving heavy equipment, machinery, and materials that are in excess weight and size of conventional methods. Operate all internal programs in order to track invoices and work hours spent on maintenance items. Must have knowledge of OSHA and other environmental regulations. Must have knowledge of general maintenance methods, operation requirements and be safety minded. Facilities Manager also closely reports specific needs and items to governmental agencies.
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for care of company assets with the goal of maximizing shareholder value. Determine facility repair priorities. Plan and direct repairs, preventive maintenance and equipment installation/relocations. Review high-cost assets for replacement or sub-contracting.  
  • Plan and lay out docking and undocking activities; perform stability calculations; prepare and lay out blocks; gather and maintain weight logs and docking plans.
  • Perform as Preventive Maintenance leader and oversee PM team by reviewing manning, schedules, tasks, spot checks and timely feedback. Adjust program for potential efficiency and improvements.
  • Support product and process improvement, as requested, by reviewing new plans, discussing equipment needs and modifications with interested parties, management and coordinating activities of facilities and docking staff.
  • Responsible for protecting employees and visitors by maintaining a safe and clean dock and working environment.
  • Work with Manager of Environmental/Occupational Safety and Health to sustain compliance with regulatory agency requirements.
  • Achieve financial objective by managing staffing levels and material.
  • As Superintendent directs the completion of project work through the hourly craft employees. Coordinate tasks for each job among customers, contract administrators, and craft workers and revises daily/weekly schedules as needed. Inspect work in progress to ensure that workmanship conforms to specifications and adherence to repair schedules.
  • Design and plan dockings in CAD.
  • Assume total responsibility for vessel, drydock, adjacent facilities and personnel during drydocking operations.
  • Coordinate & supervise the work of employees assigned to specific dockings and undockings.
  • Train employees to improve knowledge of docking processes.
  • Administer all drydocking paperwork, tests and inspections, including safety certification
