Planning and Design Civil Engineering Intern

The Civil Engineering Intern will support the Planning & Design Department in a variety of functions including design, due diligence, construction management, quantity tracking, bid document preparation, contractor coordination, and project management. This internship provides hands-on experience in both field and office settings, offering exposure to real-world engineering practices and the opportunity to contribute to impactful capital projects across Cleveland Metroparks.

Key Responsibilities:
- Assist the Chief Planning and Design Officer, Civil Engineer, Planning Engineer, and Project Managers in executing capital projects.
- Partner and coordinate with third-party design consultants and contractors to ensure successful project implementation.
- Assist with interpreting and communicating construction plans and specifications.
- Travel to various park district locations, including remote sites, to conduct construction and potential work site visits, take photos for planning purposes, and oversee contractors.
- Provide oversight and inspection operations for construction projects.
- Review pay applications, quantities, quality of work, and schedules.
- Assist in preparing strategies for project delivery and execution.
- Maintain regular and predictable attendance.
Education and Experience: Minimum of two years progress toward a bachelor’s degree in engineering (civil preferred) or a related field from an ABET-accredited program.
Qualifications:
- Valid driver’s license with a good driving record.
- Strong research and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency with computers and software, including Microsoft Office programs.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering and architectural documents.
- Strong communication skills (written and verbal) with the ability to present clearly in group and one-on-one settings.
- High degree of accuracy, organization, and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively with initiative.
- Experience with AutoCAD drafting, legal documents, property deeds, geotechnical engineering, field surveying, and identifying structural deterioration in wood and concrete.
- Ability to manage financial aspects of project management.
- Ability to work effectively with multiple disciplines toward a common goal.
Work Days: Monday – Friday, up to 40 hours per week. This is a summer 2026 internship running approximately May – August.
