In this Principal Electrical Engineer role within our centralized Electrical & Automation engineering team, you’ll be the go-to electrical subject matter expert supporting gas pipelines and compressor stations across our U.S. and Western Canada system—bringing deep expertise in large electric motors and drive systems used in gas transmission. You’ll guide capital project designs, solve complex operational and reliability challenges, steward engineering standards, and strengthen electrical safety practices, including arc flash analysis and worker safety procedures.

What You Will Do:

  • Provide expert electrical engineering support to Operations and Projects, including troubleshooting, design reviews, incident investigations, and failure analysis.

  • Support electrical power systems, large electric motors, and drive systems.

  • Participate in risk assessments, electrical hazard assessments, and Arc Flash analysis; support implementation of electrical safety standards and safe‑work procedures.

  • Provide guidance on equipment specifications, installation practices, maintenance strategies, and design standards.

  • Lead or contribute to engineering standards, specifications, and procedures assuring consistent application across the organization.

  • Serve as the escalation point for complex or systemic technical problems; identify risks and improvement opportunities.

  • Research emerging technologies and represent Enbridge on industry committees.

  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to the Electrical Community of Practice to share best practices and enhance collaboration.

  • Communicate technical recommendations clearly to stakeholders, ensuring alignment with operational requirements, cost considerations, and regulatory expectations.

Who You Are:

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. Preference is to have a PE.

  • Minimum 15 years of operating plant experience, ideally in oil & gas or petrochemical environments.

  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate across technical and non‑technical teams.

  • Strong understanding of electrical codes and standards (CSA, IEEE, API, NFPA).

  • Detailed knowledge of CSA Z462, NFPA 70E, IEEE 1584 is an asset.

  • Experience with electrical safety programs, pipeline/powerline mitigation, and major motor/drive systems is preferred.

Working Conditions:

  • Approximately 90% office-based with 10% field work.

  • Occasional travel to operating facilities for investigations, support, or equipment assessments.

  • A valid driver's license and maintenance of a responsible driving record is required and will be validated before hire.

Physical Requirements include but are not limited to: Grasping, kneeling, light – moderate lifting (objects up to 25 pounds), reaching above shoulder, repetitive motion, typing, sitting, standing, visual requirement (able to see screens, detect color coding, read fine print), hearing requirement and the ability to sit at a computer for long periods of time.

Mental Requirements (Both Field & Office) include but are not limited to: Ability to: understand, remember and apply oral and/or written instructions or other information, understand complex problems and collaborate/explore alternative solutions, organize thoughts and ideas into understandable terminology, organize and prioritize work schedule on a short-term basis, make decisions which have moderate impact on the immediate work unit and monitor impact outside this area, understand and follow basic instructions and guidelines, complete routine forms, compose letters, outlines, memoranda and basic reports and communicate with individuals via telephone.
