Position Overview:
The Managing Editor drives the publication of The Husky Herald student newspaper. This position develops and implements the publishing plan, timelines, and themes as directed by the Husky Herald Editor-in-Chief and co-manages The Husky Herald Contributor team. The ME assigns beats (stories, topics) to student writers and reporters and selects the cover art for each issue.
This position ensures that The Husky Herald stays on schedule, edits, and submits the file(s) for publishing to the professional print vendor upon final approval from The Husky Herald Editor-in-Chief.
In the absence of the Editor-in-Chief, this position will serve in that capacity, in order to ensure the smooth and continuous operations of The Husky Herald, meet key organizational goals, and provide a unique print and digital platform for student voices, stories, needs, and interests to be expressed.
The Husky Herald ME gets practical knowledge of journalism, editing, decision-making, content curation, process coordination, and publication management for a student newspaper. This position also offers valuable leadership experience in: communication, planning, facilitating team meetings, collaborating with team members, student groups, contributors, and campus partners, and conducting vendor communications.
This position also gains valuable marketing and outreach experience in recruiting and engaging students to join The Husky Herald as contributors, as well as, hosting events and workshops throughout the year.
General The Husky Herald & Student Newspaper (40%):

Develop and implement publishing plan, timelines, and themes for The Husky Herald print and digital issues in consultation with The Husky Herald EIC

Ensure the contributor team (reporters, writers, artists) stay on-schedule for publishing

Coordinate with AE and EIC to edit submitted content and provide feedback to contributors

Co-manage The Husky Herald Contributor team (recruitment/outreach, lead meetings, follow-up) with the EIC and AE
-
Coordinate with the AE and EIC to review, edit, and provide feedback on submitted content from contributors.

Curate content and content submissions for The Husky Herald (writing, art, photography, infographics)

Solicits cover art and sends to EIC for final review and approval before adding to InDesign layout for each issue

Provide second-round editing reviews of content to ensure all content meets editorial standards and aligns with The Husky Herald vision

Update The Editor-in-Chief of progress and of any concerns that may arise regarding reviewed content and/or contributor team

Upload content to the layout for each issue and re-arrange, as needed

Send finalized print issue layout to EIC for final approval

Submit issues for publishing through professional printer and/or vendor

Coordinate the submission of finalized files for publishing to the professional printer, ensuring accuracy and timely delivery.

Helps with The Husky Herald website updates and uploads of issues/content

Write occasional column or editorial for publication, as needed

Work with EIC and AE to identify, report, and assign diverse stories or beats to The Husky Herald contributors (i.e., Campus News, Diversity, ASUWB and Clubs, Recreation & Wellness, UWB Academic Programs, Opinion, Arts & Entertainment, UW/UWB Administration and Board of Regents)
