Senior Mechanical Engineer (onsite)
Johnson ControlsAbout the role
What you will do
Johnson Controls is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer! The Senior Mechanical Engineer II contributes to the design and delivery of HVAC air-handling and fan‑coil products and sub‑systems. You will plan and execute your own work on stand‑alone tasks and scoped projects (e.g., single subsystems), apply sound engineering judgment to solve problems, and collaborate closely with cross‑functional partners in design, test, manufacturing, quality, supply chain, and compliance. Work is performed with minimal supervision and within established procedures and standards. This position is onsite based in Largo, FL. Candidates must be commuting distance to the facility, or able to relocate.
How you will do it
Product & Subsystem Design
Develop concepts, models, and detailed mechanical designs for sheet‑metal, plastics, and electro‑mechanical components; drive DFMA and cost/quality improvements.
Create and review drawings, tolerance schemes, and BOMs; author and process ECR/ECO changes in accordance with internal controls.
Define and plan your own activities for stand‑alone work packages or pieces of larger project designs; lead and complete small‑scope projects (single subsystems).
Analysis, Test & Compliance
Perform calculations and trade‑off analyses (e.g., heat transfer, fluid dynamics, structural, reliability) and interpret test results to validate designs.
Partner with lab, safety, and certification agencies (e.g., UL/Intertek) to generate test criteria, execute plans, and resolve findings for applicable standards (e.g., UL 60335, A2L refrigerant sensor integrations).
Cross‑Functional Collaboration
Work with manufacturing/operations on build issues, fixtures, and routings; support part orders and prototype builds.
Interface effectively with project management, quality, and supply chain to remove roadblocks, protect interdependent deadlines, and ensure on‑time delivery.
Continuous Improvement & Support
Independently identify problems, propose options, and either resolve directly or coordinate with the right resources; escalate only highly complex issues for senior guidance.
Contribute to standard work, checklists, and design libraries; mentor junior designers/engineers informally and lead by example.
What you will need
Required
BS in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent).
5+ years progressive, related mechanical engineering experience in product development or sustaining engineering.
Ability to apply core engineering principles to resolve problems and deliver quality results with minimal supervision.
Proficient in 3D CAD and mechanical detailing; able to communicate technical concepts clearly in writing and verbally across disciplines.
Preferred
Experience with HVAC, air handling or fan‑coil systems (sheet‑metal design, assemblies, heaters/enclosures, coils, fans).
Familiarity with regulated testing and certification workflows (e.g., partnering with UL/Intertek; A2L refrigerant considerations).
Exposure to ECO/ECR processes, PLM/PDM, and ERP‑driven BOM management; collaboration with manufacturing and quality on PFMEA/8D
