PRODUCT ENGINEER (Timberland PRO)

What will you do?

A day in the life of a product engineer at Timberland looks a little like this. 

As a trusted member of the Product Creation team, you will report to the Senior Manager, Product Engineering and you will manage deadline adherence for all seasonal development and commercialization milestones. 

Let’s break down that day-in-the-life a bit more.

  • Project Management.  Maintain the daily development/commercialization activities with respect to assigned projects to achieve seasonal and non-seasonal (SMU) project results from conception through completion of approved confirmed standards  This entails advancing product specifications through development milestones, Model Fit-Extreme Fit/commercialization, confirmation standards, costing and leather standards in order to reach weekly/monthly deadlines 
  • Process to be completed through utilization of PLM (Product Line Management) BOM (Bill of Materials)/Mini BOM/Materials electronic computer system for Color Update (CU), New Upper (NU) and Totally New (TN) project types 
  • Works as a member of the Product Creation team to maintain product integrity with respect to safety footwear pre-certification at each milestone
    • Competitor product benchmark tear downs, traction analysis, at conceptual/line close/sales meeting stages as applicable; and any unique end use requirement(s)
    • All to be completed with a focus on innovation/efficiency for related product and process
  • Leverage internal Footwear Performance Index (FPI) testing on PRO and competitor product benchmark footwear, providing input to the Design/Product Management team to improve product, identifying key positive "feature/benefit" differences or product areas that need enhancements
  • Last Development.  Work with the Senior Product Engineer, Design and Product Management/Merch to initiate and oversee the development of lasts based upon desired aesthetic, performance, comfort and fit while maximizing use of existing PRO last and protective toe cap library and for PRO brand fit consistency 
  • Technical Package Development.  Analyze specifications, materials, construction, fit, pattern and process at each stage of the development process providing input as needed to ensure fit, function and manufacturability  
    • Actively participate in all product related milestones, from seasonal kick-off through commercialization     
  • Upper Pattern Development.  Execute against strategy for components and manage upper development for yield, manufacturability, fit, functional performance, cost and desired aesthetic throughout product creation process 
  • Materials and Component Development.  Coordinate and maintain material and structural specifications as well as the follow through on the testing of each individual component to maintain Timberland standards for quality, type and durability with regards to compounds, construction and mold type 
  • Mold Development.  Participate in the validation of mold development conformance from initial drawings through confirmation of sample size, including Extreme Size bottom molds
    • Validation includes analyzing sole design in support of Slip / Traction certification requirements 
  • Footwear Development.  Coordinate and manage certification to applicable Industrial/Hospitality/Health Care safety footwear standards to ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials), CSA (Canadian Standards Association), EN-ISO / UK (International Organization for Standardization) and any other country-specific related footwear safety compliance requirements in conjunction with “Buy-Ready” requirements. 
  • Costing Objectives.  Manage costing objectives as outlined by the Product Manager
