We are seeking a highly motivated Survey Manager to join our Land Development team at one of our office locations in Akron, OH; Cleveland, OH; Pittsburgh, PA; or Youngstown, OH. This position will perform work on a variety of field surveying assignments to facilitate the completion of projects including roads, building sites, recreational areas, and bridges.
The Survey Manager will supervise multiple field crews, provides a professional review of work products; helps manage office and field workload under the direction of the Regional Operations Manager, and supports the survey department by maintaining projects on schedule and budget.
What You'll Do:
The Survey Manager will oversee crews in their conducting of land surveys for the determination of boundary lines, the retracement of government survey lines, and re-establishment of land survey corners. You will also process the data into survey basemaps for the engineer team’s use in design.
- Types of field surveys include Boundary Surveys, Topographic Survey, ALTA/ASCM Land Title Surveys, Project Control Surveys, Hydrographic Surveys and Construction Layout and As-built Surveys.
- Prepare survey sites and remove necessary obstacles, including debris, brush, tree limbs, etc. to perform the survey.
- Adjust and operate survey instruments such as robotic total stations, data collectors, laser scanners, GPS, and other standard survey equipment to collect field data.
- Provide all types of survey research, computations, review of computer-aided survey drafting of topographic maps and plats, written descriptions of land for deeds, leases, and other legal documents in accordance with local, state, federal, and project requirements.
- Review projects, performs quality assurance, reports progress through completion of each project assigned by the Director.
- Assist in scheduling field crews and oversight of field procedures and survey vehicles and equipment.
- Ability to perform business development, prepares proposals, and client presentations.
- Coordinate with clients, office staff, and field crews to attain company objectives and goals.
- Provide technical expertise and work with survey staff to establish and maintain procedures and quality standards.
- Responsible for scheduling, performance, and management of multiple survey projects and personnel.
- Monitor and forecast survey workload, staffing, and budgeting.

- Pursuit and management of projects with local clients
- Meeting with clients, architects, engineers, and other design personnel to establish project plans, budgets, and schedules.
What You'll Bring:
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in surveying or civil engineering
- Proven experience as a Survey Phase or Project Manager
- Registered Surveyor License, Ohio or Pennsylvania preferred.
Knowledge and Skills
- Strong leadership, relationship management, communication, and analytical skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and tasks simultaneously, including travel to project sites with occasional overnight stays.
- In-depth knowledge of survey laws, principles, surveying principles, techniques, and safety practices.
- Extensive Knowledge of surveying instruments and equipment, including their proper use and maintenance; Advanced knowledge of field instrumentation (e.g., GPS, robotic total stations) is a plus.
- Proficient in survey processing software (AutoCAD Civil 3D, Trimble Business Center); Experience with civil engineering software (MicroStation & Civil 3D) is a plus.
- Civil construction experience is preferred
- Ability to sign and seal legal documents
Physical Requirements
The surveying work is performed on construction sites, in heavy traffic areas, and on rough terrain. Candidate must:
- Ability to climb steep hills and navigate heavily wooded areas in all weather conditions.
- Capable of carrying survey specific equipment (depending on assignment can weigh in excess of 50 pounds).
- Proficient in using hands to handle tools, controls, and equipment, and able to reach with arms.
- Ability to walk on uneven terrain and perform physical tasks such as climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, and crawling.
- Comfortable working outdoors for extended periods.
