About the role

DESCRIPTION:

The Wastewater and Stormwater Operations Section, within Public Works seeks a self-motivated, hardworking individual with good interpersonal skills to fill a vacant Maintenance Worker I position. This position will provide operation and maintenance assistance for both storm and wastewater utilities within Water Resources. (THIS POSITION IS REPRESENTED BY THE AFSCME UNION)

Ideal Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate will possess the following attributes:    

  • One-year general work experience.  Background in stormwater or wastewater field preferred.
  • A valid Washington State Commercial Driver’s License.
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively as a part of a team.
  • Ability to use tact and good judgment in responding to questions from citizens and the general public.
  • A positive “can do” attitude; takes the initiative to get the work done.
  • Take direction well, fast learner, and good attitude.
  • Adaptable to changing work environments.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

The essential functions of this position include but are not limited to

  • The position is an entry-level position that performs general maintenance and repair of the City's utilities, which includes Wastewater, and Storm and Surface Water.
  • Performs basic maintenance at storm and wastewater facilities.  This includes pruning, vegetation control, and litter removal, fertilizing and transplanting plants.
  • May assists with operations and maintenance crews to perform basic duties, such as installing manholes, catch basins, sewer/stormwater pipe, assisting on vactor trucks, operating dump trucks, backhoes, and providing traffic control for flagging.
  • Operation of various hand tools and power tools including but not limited to mowers, edgers, blowers, weed eaters, jackhammers, rotary hammers, compactors, drills, portable pumps, chop saws, and may be trained on other specialized equipment (e.g. chainsaw).
  • Assignments are generally outside and may require work in inclement weather and/or dirty, wet noisy or cramped work sites.
  • This position requires the physical ability to perform manual tasks, and mobility to navigate all types of surfaces and terrain.
  • This position may work in hazardous areas, including street surfaces, rights-of-way, medians, ditches, and confined spaces (e.g. manholes and sewer pump stations), and around heavy equipment or potentially dangerous tools.

TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS:


Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Knowledge of basic safety procedures and precautions.
  • Skills and abilities with computer, tablet and smartphone.
  • Ability to read blueprints, maps, and make basic notations to record map changes.
  • Skill in operating and maintaining small manual/power tools and equipment.
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical activity.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to work as a member of a team.
  • Ability to use tact and good judgment in responding to questions from the general public.
  • Demonstrated punctual, regular and reliable attendance is required.

Experience/Education
One year general work experience. Knowledge in wastewater or stormwater practices is a preferred.

Special Requirements
Must possess a valid Washington State Class A Commercial Driver’s License with a tanker endorsement within 6 months of hire date.

Compensation (minimum-maximum):

$54,127.01 - $65,787.90
