Job Summary
The Residential Underwriting Manager is accountable for ensuring all Residential loan underwriting is in accordance with established guidelines, policies and procedures of Cogent, government agencies, GSEs, investors and mortgage insurers and completed within established Service Level Agreements (SLAs). The Residential Underwriting Manager will be responsible for supervision of all Residential Underwriting staff. This role may require the Manager to underwrite files as determined by current production and staffing levels. The Residential Underwriting Manager reports directly to the Director of Residential Lending Operations.

Responsibilities and Duties
- Development and maintenance of Residential Lending Underwriting policies, procedures, job aids, overlays and condition sets.
- Development and supervision of Residential Underwriting team including hiring, training and performance management.
- Proactive management of Residential Underwriting pipeline to ensure compliance with established SLAs including initial assignment, load balancing, conditions received, etc.
- Management of all escalation & exception related underwriting requests.
- Provide technical and guideline interpretation to underwriters and production staff
- Stays abreast of changes within industry and how they affect guidelines, underwriting workflow, and loan origination system requirements.
- Review and preparation of responses to QC and Investor Suspense conditions and identification of opportunities for improvement and training based on conditions.
- Collaboration with other departments and staff within Residential Lending and the bank, providing counsel on a variety of underwriting related items.
- Work with senior management to establish department goals and objectives.
- Ensures BSA compliance by reading and being familiar with the BSA/AML program/policy; following all BSA/AML/OFAC policies and procedures; and completing all BSA/AML/OFAC related online courses.
- All other tasks, responsibilities, or duties, as directed by management.
Qualifications and Skills
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in business, management or other appropriate field or comparable experience.
- 10 years mortgage underwriting experience with at least 5 years in a management capacity.
- Expert level knowledge of underwriting guidelines for Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, FHA, VA & USDA.
- Strong leadership and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to understand opposing points of view on highly complex issues and to negotiate and integrate different viewpoints.
- Ability to make decisions that have significant impact on the department’s credibility, operations, and services.
- Excellent organizational, oral and written communication skills.
Preferred:
- Proficiency with Encompass LOS
- FHA DE designation
- VA SAR/LAPP designation
