Senior Research Scientist

Science Systems and Applications, Inc. (SSAI) is seeking Senior Research Scientist candidates to support an opportunity at the US Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, DC.

Required Qualifications:

• PhD in Physical Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or equivalent degree in related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• At least five (5) years of experience in the field of optical, infrared or radio interferometry and familiarity with astronomy, Space Domain Awareness, or ionospheric remote sensing
• Experience with optics, optical detectors and lasers, designing and performing experiments to test and improve the capabilities of current instruments
• Experience with MATLAB and, preferably, also experience with some combination of FORTRAN, C, C++, Python, and IDL programming languages.
• Active Security Clearance required. 

Desired Qualifications: 

• Experience with correcting astronomical data for natural and man-made terrestrial artifacts, as well as experience setting up and testing hardware.

Physical Requirements: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and use hands to touch, handle or feel objects, tools or controls. The employee frequently is required to talk and hear and occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
