Sr. Chemist 

New Albany, Ohio

Position Summary:

Performs testing and analysis of raw material, intermediate and bulk products to determine identity, purity, quality, strength and composition.  Supports peer data review and investigational testing as needed.  Proficient with core Pharmavite methods for physical testing, wet chemistry and instrumental methods, with mastery of one or more analysis type (such as liquid chromatography, inductively coupled plasma, etc).  Supports and may lead laboratory OOS investigations.  Provides technical support for test method development, transfer, optimization, validation and other related projects as assigned.  Once qualified, works independently to perform assigned test methods and investigational or project support with minimal oversight.

Responsibilities:

  • Provides onsite testing, troubleshooting and lab related support during assigned work shift with effective relief communications to peers / team

  • Performs physical, chemical and instrumental testing as assigned on raw materials, bulk and finished products; in support of QC release, investigations, method development / improvement, stability or development studies.

    • Performs physical testing techniques such as density, specific gravity, LOD, particle size, tablet or fill weight, and similar.

    • Performs chemical testing techniques such as titration, FT-NIR, Raman, Moisture, dissolution, UV and similar.

    • Performs instrumental analytical testing techniques such as NMR, GC, HPLC, ICP-OES, ICP-MS and similar.

  • Achieves and maintains mastery of one or more testing areas, able to serve as trainer for new and developing analysts.

  • Reviews and verifies lab documentation for completeness and accuracy prior to reporting.

  • Leads or supports Out-Of-Specification (OOS) or other investigations as assigned.

  • Troubleshoots lab instrument and method issues, performing repairs or obtaining appropriate outside service.

  • Performs method verification and validation studies in support of method transfer.

  • Maintains and calibrates laboratory instruments and maintains data files as required.

  • Collaborates with peers at other sites, or groups as needed (QC, AS, R&D, Tech Ops) to update existing methods to meet compendia requirements or incorporate new technology where appropriate.

  • Reviews, updates and develops job aids, procedures or methods as assigned.

  • Performs additional work outside normal schedule as required to support business objectives.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

Requires a four-year college or university degree or its equivalent in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Pharmacy or Biology or related science.  Advanced degree a plus.

Certification:

None.

Experience:

This is a career level position requiring in-depth knowledge and experience.  Requires three to five years related laboratory experience in a laboratory environment.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Requires:

  • A competent knowledge of chemistry practice and theory including methods validation and use of laboratory equipment such as Auto titrators, UV, FTIR, HPLC, GC, ICP, and computer-controlled dissolution tester. Some knowledge of conventional laboratory characterization techniques such as LC-MS, GC-MS, and NMR is a plus.

  • Hands-on proficiency with analytical methods and instrumentation.

  • Proactive and clear verbal and written communication.

  • Ability to lead effectively in a cross-functional team environment.

  • Familiarity with USP and other compendia, as well as knowledge of applicable FDA and ICH guidelines is preferred.

  • Strong project, organizational and time management skills. Ability to prioritize workload while meeting deadlines.
