Overview:

Applicants are requested for a Senior or Distinguished R&D Staff position to lead and execute research related to microfabricated and printed electronics and sensing technologies.  The candidate is expected to develop and lead research programs focused on the areas of 1) microfabricated sensors and electronics, 2) printed sensors and electronics, 3) additive manufacturing of electronic devices and circuits, 4) microfabricated electro-optic devices and systems, and 5) advanced integrated circuits packaging techniques ranging from chip-on-board to 3D-based methods. 

 

Candidates should have a demonstrated record of technical accomplishment in the fields of 1) microfabricated sensors, 2) microfabrication methods and associated tools/equipment, 3) printed and additively manufacturing methods and equipment, 4) sensor modeling, design, and characterization, and 5) advanced integrated circuit/sensor fabrication technology including 2.5D and 3D packaging schemes. These research areas align well with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Energy’s mission supporting energy, environment, and national security.

 

The position is in the Sensors and Electronics Group of ORNL’s Electrification and Energy Infrastructure Division, and research will be conducted at both the ORNL’s Hardin Valley campus and the ORNL main campus. The candidate is expected to collaborate with staff across multiple divisions at ORNL and will serve as a subject matter expert and technical communicator at conferences and project review meetings, as well as when interfacing with program managers, other national laboratories, industry, and universities.

 

Major Duties / Responsibilities:

  • Lead the conception and establishment of new research programs related to sensor design and fabrication including microfabrication and additive manufacturing methods for sensor realization.
  • Lead the conception and establishment of new research programs related to printed electronics including aerosol jet printing and inkjet printing of functional materials.
  • Develop novel optical and electronic technologies to demonstrate multiplexed optical modulation for very high data-rate communication.
  • Collaborate with a large group of scientists across ORNL and within the Electrification Section to establish and direct impactful research programs.
  • Active involvement in staff mentoring and hiring activities.
  • Interface effectively with ORNL battery scientists and electrical engineers.
  • Serve as a technical resource for staff and postdoctoral researchers.
  • Write and lead research and development proposals.
  • Work with ORNL staff and program managers to influence the national R&D agenda.
  • Present and report research results in high-impact peer reviewed journals, conferences, and project reviews.
