Under the guidance of Informatics Academic Advisors, Peer Advisors will support current and prospective Informatics students by providing guidance on academic planning, policies, and resources. The mission of the Informatics Peer Advisor program is to create a welcoming and informative environment for current and prospective Informatics majors and Informatics minors. Peer Advisors are current undergraduate Informatics majors who demonstrate professionalism, dedication, and knowledge of the Informatics program and services that contribute to the mission and vision of the Information School.

Individuals in these positions will work up to 10 hours per week depending on staffing needs and other projects assigned throughout the school year. The iSchool is seeking to hire Peer Advisors for the coming Academic Year 2025-2026.

Responsibilities will include the following duties:

·       Provide one-on-one drop-in advice to undergraduate students in-person and on Zoom.

·       Respond to and field questions from current and prospective students via the general email account.

·       Assist students in understanding UW registration policies, INFO degree requirements, Areas of Inquiry, and Informatics admissions.

·       Guide students in utilizing UW academic resources, including MyPlan, DARS, and Academic Support Programs.

·       Support students with course scheduling and registration.

·       Provide appropriate referrals to departmental advisors and campus offices (such as Financial Aid, Registrar’s Office, LiveWell, etc.).

·       Learn, interpret, and communicate Federal, State, and University rules and regulations.

·       Maintain meaningful notes from advising meetings and enter them into the appropriate database(s).

·       Assist in developing marketing materials, presentations, and assist with data entry.

·       Represent Informatics at campus-wide and department events, such as orientations, information sessions, major fairs, and student panels.

·       Assist with and lead group advising sessions, including Informatics Program Overview sessions and new student orientations.

·       Support student community-building initiatives, such as social events and mentorship programs.

·       Assist in reviewing the Informatics advising Canvas course for accuracy and contribute to student resources.

·       Assist in planning and coordinating quarterly undergraduate student engagement events in collaboration with advisors and student leadership.

·       Serve as a student representative on relevant curriculum and academic committees.

·     Complete special projects as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

·       Informatics undergraduate student at the UW Seattle campus enrolled in at least 6 credit hours per quarter from Fall 2025 to Spring 2026.

·       Students applying through Work Study must be enrolled full-time in Autumn, Winter, and Spring Quarters.

·       Strong communication and interpersonal skills, both in-person and professional writing.

·       Highly motivated with the ability to work independently.

·       Experience working with diverse populations of students, staff, and faculty.

·       Capacity for discretion, diplomacy, and confidentiality regarding sensitive student matters.

·       Genuine interest in helping fellow students navigate their academic journey.

·       Good academic standing with at least a 2.7 GPA.

·       Completion of at least two quarters at the UW prior to the start date (Spring Quarter 2025).

 

Desired Qualifications:

·       Prior experience in peer advising, student leadership, or mentoring roles (e.g., Orientation Leader, Resident Advisor, Student Government, etc.).

·       Experience facilitating workshops or giving group presentations.
