About the role

Title: Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Coordinator

Position Purpose:

The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Coordinator supports the mission of the college by ensuring the college campus community is as safe as possible for all students, faculty, staff and visitors, and that all applicable rules, regulations and college policies are being followed. This position may be considered “Essential Personnel” in the event that:

  1. an emergency occurs on the Bates Campus or in the vicinity that would impact Bates, or
  2. other emergency events deemed appropriate. Essential Personnel are required to report to or remain at work if instructed to do so if contacted directly by the supervisor (or his/her designee), the President or a member of the President’s Staff (Sr. Leadership Team.)

Job Duties:

  • Leads safety and environmental compliance initiatives and programs
  • Investigates and submits written reports and recommendations on incidents involving environmental health and safety matters.
  • Maintains EHS records.
  • Conducts surveys of campus facilities and operations to identify existing/potential hazardous conditions. 
  • Maintains access to and responsibility within all areas in all buildings owned by the college.
  • Interacts with all departments and parts of the campus community to assist with EHS issues.
  • Practices safe working techniques and reinforces the safety policies, guidelines and procedures of Bates College.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of safety guidelines and related environmental health and safety communications and educational information.
  • Coordinates and presents technical training programs in general safety training and/or specialty area for staff and faculty, as required by regulations, college policy and/or departmental directive.
  • Works closely with Director of EHS to manage workload and coordinate tasks.
  • Serves on safety committees as requested.
  • Participates in institutional professional development and training.
  • Recommends corrective or preventative actions.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent required. Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in safety, science or engineering desired, but not required.
  • Current valid driver’s license and clean driving record required.

  • Laboratory safety
  • Hazard communication

  • Excellent discretion and ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Proficiency in basic data management systems and basic computer applications (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google docs, email and shared calendars).
  • Willingness and ability to learn additional applications and software systems as needed.
  • Ability and willingness to travel as needed to conferences, meetings and training sessions.
  • Ability and willingness to work weekends, evenings and other non-traditional schedules as needed.
